BOSTON—Led by four individual victories in field events, the Northeastern women's track and field team earned the team title at the Boston University Season Opener on Saturday, Dec. 7.
"When we met on Thursday, we asked the team not to put a lot of stress on themselves [at the meet] but just pay attention to doing things well," said head coach
Cathrine Erickson. "We told them that we are at the base of mountain right now and it is important to do a good job now, but the season is long."
Northeastern collected 132 points for the gold, beating out Boston College (110) and UMass Lowell (99) who earned second and third as a team, respectively.
Victoria Alexander started the day with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.83 seconds).
Ashlee Pitts and
Jessica Dunnigan competed alongside Alexander, crossing seventh and ninth overall. Alexander later led six Huskies in the 200-meter race where she finished fifth at 25.13 seconds.
Rosalie Caracciolo made her track debut as the only Husky competing in the 1,000-meter run. The freshman notched third place, crossing at 3:07.80.
Jocelyn Hubbard led a duo in the 1-mile run, marking a place in the Northeastern history books. The sophomore now ranks fourth on the NU all-time performance list after clocking in at 5:01.76.
Eryn Wheeler finished third in the event, crossing at 5:10.87.
Two additional Huskies also made their way to the top-10 all-time performance list after a strong show in the 5,000-meter race. Rookie
Jordan O'Dea now ranks fifth in the event after an eighth-place while
Danielle Klein took over the number eight slot, finishing 10th (17:56.63).
First-year
Betsy Garnick earned fourth overall in the 60-meter hurdles (9.00 seconds) before leading Northeastern in the high jump (1.45 meters) with an eighth-place finish.Â
The NU women dominated the field, earning four individual titles from
Jacilyn Briggs (pole vault),
Georgia Pingue (long jump and triple jump), and
Julia Westover (weight throw).
"These performances are an indication of how hard our coaches and athletes have been working this fall toward building a balanced and competitive program," said head coach
Cathrine Erickson. "I am looking forward to watching our program grow this year."
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 14, when they host the 5th annual Jay Carisella Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center.
