Northeastern culls trio of Hockey East weekly awards

Full Hockey East release

On the eve of Northeastern's third Beanpot championship game appearance in five years, the Huskies garnered a trio of awards from the Hockey East league offices. On Monday morning, it was announced that freshman forward Kevin Roy and senior goaltender Chris Rawlings have been named Athletic Republic Player of the Week and Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, to accompany Northeastern (8-13-3, 4-11-3 HEA) receiving the Hockey East's Team of the Week award.

On one of college hockey's biggest stages, Roy wasted no time in putting his skills on display. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native potted all three Northeastern goals for his first-career hat trick in the Huskies' 3-2 victory over Boston University in the Beanpot semifinals on Feb. 4.

On the other end of the ice, the 6'5 netminder from North Delta, British Columbia, turned away 32-of-34 Terrier shots to move to 3-3 all time in Beanpot appearances. The win marked Northeastern's first win over the Terriers in the Beanpot since 1988, the last time the 'Pot was brought back to Huntington Avenue.

Rawlings shares the award with Providence College's Jon Gilles.

Roy's trio of goals marked the first hat trick by a Husky in the Beanpot since Mike Ryan turned the feat in a 5-2 Northeastern win over Harvard on Feb. 4, 2002. He is also the first freshman to score a hat trick in his first Beanpot appearance since 2000 Beanpot MVP Krys Kolanos registered a natural hat trick (three uninterrupted goals in a row) in a 6-0 semifinal victory over Northeastern.

The award marks Roy's fourth merit from Hockey East thus far this season. The 5'10 forward was heralded as Rookie of the Week on Oct. 15 and earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors on Jan. 2. He was later awarded the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Month for January, marking Northeastern's first Rookie of the Month award since Brad Thiessen took the honor in January 2007.

Rawlings' award is his first this season, 12th of his career, and first since he won Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for December on Jan 3, 2012. Northeastern's Team of the Week honors is its second this season after gaining the award on Oct. 17 after season-opening victories over Merrimack and Boston College.

Roy currently leads Northeastern in total points (30), goals (15), shots (109) game-winning goals (3), and is tied with senior captain Vinny Saponari for the team lead in assists (15). Roy is currently on a four-game point streak, tying his career-high, and has scored a point in eight of his last nine games, tallying an impressive eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in that span.

Nationally, Roy has placed himself among some of the best players in the country. Entering the Beanpot championship game on Monday, Roy is tied for 20th in the nation in points and is tied for 10th in goals. With 15 tallies in 24 games played, Roy ranks 6th in the nation in goals per game average (0.62) and is in the top-10 in shots on goal. Among freshmen, Roy is tied for first in points with Miami (Ohio) forward Riley Barber, but stands first in the country in points per game (1.25), having played four less games than the RedHawk. In total, Roy's 15 goals are second only to Penn State's David Glenn, who has 16 on the year.

Within Hockey East, Roy is 5th in points behind Mike Collins (34, Merrimack), Johnny Gaudreau (33, Boston College), Kevin Goumas (32, New Hampshire), and Pat Mullane (31, Boston College). His goal output is tied for second behind BC's Steven Whitney (17), and Roy is in the top-10 in assists as well.

Last Monday, Rawlings moved to 1-1 against the Terriers in the Beanpot, getting even for a 2-1 loss to BU in the semifinals of the 2010 tournament. The Huskies' backstop is 2-0 against Harvard, and has the chance to notch his first-career Beanpot victory over Boston College on Monday (0-2, 6.79 goals against average in two career starts), in hopes of avenging a heartbreaking 7-6 OT loss to the Eagles in the 2011 Beanpot finals.

Rounding out the awards, Providence's Nick Saracino was named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
