WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Kashaia Cannon scored a career-high 27 points and the Northeastern women's basketball team (13-9, 6-5 CAA) erased a 15-point second half deficit to force overtime, but the Huskies fell, 78-70, to the William & Mary Tribe (6-17, 4-8 CAA) on Friday night at Kaplan Arena. The game was William & Mary's Hoops for a Cure game for breast cancer awareness.
Cannon (Providence, R.I.) set career marks with 10 field goals and six 3-pointers en route to her new high mark, also grabbing three rebounds. She was joined in double figures for NU by senior
Deanna Kerkhof (Wallaceburg, Ontario) who scored 15, and junior
Jewel Tunstull (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who scored 10 along with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Tribe were led by a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double from Emily Correal, as she and Janine Aldridge (15 points) led the charge for a Tribe squad that saw four players eclipse ten points in the win. W&M used 14 steals to force 24 Northeastern turnovers, and connecting on 19-of-25 from the charity stripe, compared to NU's 5-of-10 performance. The Tribe also held a 41-33 edge in rebounding margin.
Sophomores
A'lece Mark (Springfield, Mass.) and
Amencie Mercier (Pierrefonds, Quebec) also chipped in for Northeastern. Mark scored eight points to go along with six rebounds and a game-high seven assists, while Mercier dropped six points and five assists. Senior
Christine Huber (North Babylon, N.Y.) rounded out the scoresheet for the Huskies with four points and four rebounds.
Northeastern opened the game on fire, leading by as many as 14 in the first half, before a 21-1 run by the Tribe gave them the lead until the final minutes of regulation. NU trailed by as many as 15 in the second half, but Cannon's scoring sparked a 13-0 run that eventually got the Huskies back on top.
NU shot 47.3 percent from the field in the game, connecting on 26-of-55 from the floor and assisting on 17 of its 26 baskets. The Huskies also connected on 13-of-31 from three, good for 41.9 percent. The 13 threes tie a season-high for the Red and Black.
Kerkhof got the scoring started for NU, drilling a three on the game's first possession. The Huskies scored on their first five trips down, including four 3-pointers, opening up a 14-8 lead and forcing a Tribe timeout at 17:21 of the first.
Following the game's first media stoppage, Mark continued the Huskies hot shooting start with her first three, before connecting again from the top of the key to open up a 20-10 lead. The sophomore then found Cannon for her third long ball of the day, and Huber connected for one of her own to make it 26-12 Northeastern seven minutes into the game.
Overall, NU hit 9-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-9 from three to open the contest, but William & Mary scored 14 of the game's next 15 points to pull within one at 27-26 and force a La-Force timeout with 9:08 remaining in the first.
An Aldridge three after the timeout put WIlliam & Mary on top for the first time, and the Tribe extended their run to 21-1 before Tunstull and Kerkhof scored to get NU back within two at 33-31 before a media break at 6:20.
After a Kerkhof steal and connection with Cannon in transition, the Huskies went to the final stoppage of the first half at 2:10 trailing 38-33. Neither team scored over the half's final two minutes, and the game went to the break with the same score. Cannon led NU in scoring in the first, scoring 11 points.
Cannon continued her hot 3-point shooting to start the second half, knocking down her fourth of the day on NU's first possession to pull the Huskies within two. The Tribe responded with an 12-2 run, taking their largest lead of the day at 50-38 and leading to an NU timeout at 13:36 of the second.
A three-point play conversion for Kerkhof got the Huskies back within single digits after the stop, and W&M called time leading by nine with 12:31 left. The Tribe responded with six straight, pushing their lead to 56-41, the largest of the day for either side.
10 straight for the Huskies, including eight for Cannon, got the Red and Black back within five, forcing another William & Mary timeout at 8:02 of the second. Kerkhof's second triple of the day cut the Tribe lead to two, and the game went the 7:03 media timeout with the Huskies trailing 56-54.
Affter the stop, Correal ended the run and pushed the lead back to four, before a Mercier three made it a one-point game. Correal answered again with a lay-in before the game's final media break at 3:46, but couldn't convert a three-point play on the other side of the timeout. A Cannon free throw made it 60-58, before she hit in traffic to tie the game with three minutes to play.
After Cannon tied the game, Tunstull connected inside to make it 62-60, and Northeastern took its first lead since midway through the first half. With 1:51 to play, Tunstull rejected Jazmen's Boone attempt to take the lead for the Tribe, then grabbed a crucial rebound on W&M's next attempt before scoring herself to make it 64-61 Northeastern.
The Tribe took time with 1:07 remaining, and Correal pulled them within one in the game's final minute. She then drew contact and went to the line with 11.3 seconds remaining, hitting one of two, tying the game at 64-all. Northeastern couldn't get a shot off on its final possession, and the game went to overtime.
Boone hit the first bucket of overtime, banking one in from the lane. Cannon responded with a runner of her own, before W&M scored five straight to go up 71-66. A pair of Kerkhof free throws pulled the Huskies within three, but the Tribe converted free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Up next for the Huskies, NU will head down I-64 to Norfolk for a Sunday matinee at Old Dominion. Tip-off from the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Sunday is set for 2 p.m.
