Huskies earn No. 1 seed in Richmond
By virtue of winning all potential tiebreakers regardless of future results, NU has earned the No. 1 seed for the 2013 CAA Men's Basketball Championship, which will be held March 9-11 in Richmond, Va. It is the first time since joining the conference in 2005-06 that NU has earned the top seed. Only seven teams (Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern and William & Mary) are eligible for this year's tournament, but all 11 teams will figure into the seeding/tie-breaking process. At the conclusion of regular-season play, each team's place will be determined, with the spots of the ineligible teams then vacated and the seeds established.
Lee named national finalist for Senior CLASS Award
Northeastern senior
Jonathan Lee has been named a men's basketball finalist for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Lee is one of just 10 national finalists for the award, which recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence — community, classroom, character and competition. “We are extremely excited for Jon and proud that he is receiving this recognition,” said head coach
Bill Coen. “Jon possesses a tireless work ethic and provides our team with tremendous leadership, both on and off the court. He is involved in the community, is well liked throughout our campus, and has achieved in the classroom. He is a true ambassador for our program and our university.”

SI's Davis rates Coen one of top 20 National Coach of the Year candidates
Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis, on Feb. 14, listed Northeastern head coach
Bill Coen as one of his top 20 candidates for national Coach of the Year honors. Coen was the only CAA coach mentioned in the ranking. Now in his seventh season on Huntington Avenue, Coen has guided the Huskies to at least a share of their first-ever CAA title after being picked fifth in the preseason poll.
Smith named Player of the Week for second time
Joel Smith earned CAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 4-10. It was the second time in three weeks Smith earned the honor, and the third time in four weeks an NU player garnered the distinction. Smith averaged 23.0 points and 5.0 rebounds to lead Northeastern to a pair of road wins. He scored a game-high 19 points as the Huskies rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat Hofstra. He followed with a game-high 27 points, five rebounds and three assists as NU downed Old Dominion in overtime. For the week, he shot 56 percent from the floor, including 7-of-16 from 3-point range.
NU's best CAA start in program history and among best conference starts ever
Northeastern opened CAA play 12-1 for the first time in program history, besting the 10-1 start in 2008-09. The Huskies started the conference schedule 8-0, posting the best CAA start since joining the conference in 2005 and the fourth-best all-time conference start in program history. The hot start also tied for the fifth-best in CAA history. The 2006-07 VCU team and the 1985-86 Richmond team both started 11-0, while James Madison started 9-0 in 1990-91 and 1991-92. Old Dominion in 2004-05 and Richmond in 1988-89 also opened 8-0.
How sweep it is
Northeastern has swept two-game season series from four CAA opponents: George Mason, Drexel, Hofstra and William & Mary. The Huskies also defeated James Madison and Towson in the only meetings between the programs this season.
SI on Northeastern: “One of the biggest surprises in college basketball”
Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel recently called the “unheralded Huskies” of Northeastern “one of the biggest surprises in college basketball.” Thamel's story took a closer look at the team as it shoots for an NCAA tournament bid. In the article, VCU's Shaka Smart praises head coach
Bill Coen: “He's done a terrific job at Northeastern, consistently finding guys who end up being a lot better than people think. He and his staff do a great job seeing things other people don't see.”

Coen's Cardiac Canines
The Huskies have had a flair for the dramatic this season, overcoming double-digit deficits in five victories. Most recently, NU stormed back from 10 down in the last 10 minutes to defeat Hofstra, 62-57, on Feb. 6 in Hempstead.

Sharing the rock
Northeastern has tallied double-digit assists in 26 of 28 games this season. The Huskies have registered at least 15 assists in 11 of 16 conference games this season after hitting that mark just three times in 12 non-conference contests. NU is second in the CAA, averaging 14.2 assists per game.
Deep threat
More than 30 percent of Northeastern's scoring is coming from beyond the arc. The Huskies average 7.0 made 3-point field goals per game, which is third in the CAA. In league play, the number jumps to 7.7. NU, which made a season-high 12 3-pointers on Feb. 11 at William & Mary, is shooting 37 percent from long-range on the season, which is first in the league, and an impressive 42 percent in CAA games.
