Northeastern in the Beanpot
Northeastern plays in the 61st annual Beanpot Tournament, taking on No. 11 Boston University in the first semifinal on Monday, Feb. 4, before meeting up with either No. 5 Boston College or Harvard the following week on Feb. 11. The Huskies' first-round matchup against the archrival Terriers is the first encounter between the two squads in the Beanpot since the 2010 semifinals. NU has played five games in the tournament since then, going 2-1 against Harvard and 0-2 against BC. The 2013 edition of Boston's mid-winter classic marks the 25th anniversary since Northeastern last raised the Beanpot trophy. The Huskies are four-time Beanpot champions, winning the tournament in 1980, 1984, 1985 and 1988. Boston University has won the Beanpot a record 29 times while Boston College collected its 17th overall crown last season. Harvard has won 10 Beanpots with its last coming in 1993.
Huskies vs. Boston University in the Beanpot
Monday's first meeting with BU since Feb. 1, 2010 marks the longest span two teams can go before squaring off in the Beanpot Tournament. The Terriers have clearly held the upper hand in the Beanpot series, holding a 31-7 advantage, including winning the last 15 fixtures. Feb. 4, 2013, marks the 20th Beanpot semifinal meeting between Northeastern and BU. The Huskies trail, 2-17, losing the first nine semifinal matchups. The first win over BU in the semis occurred 33 years ago to the day when John Montgomery scored to OT winner on Feb. 4, 1980 (6-5). The Huskies won the next semifinal game on Greg Neary's winner on Feb. 8, 1983 (4-3). Northeastern's last victory against BU in the Beanpot Tournament occurred the last time the Huskies hoisted the prized trophy on Feb. 8, 1988. Since then, the Huskies and Terriers have crossed paths 100 times with BU holding a 69-24-7 margin.
Third times the charm?
Vinny Saponari's game-winning goal at Boston University on Jan. 18, 2013, carved out a special niche in Huskies' history. With that win, Northeastern has defeated all three Beanpot participants during the regular season before the actual start of the Beanpot Tournament. This has occurred just three times in school history. NU accomplished that feat under Jim Bell during the 1964-65 season followed by Bruce Crowder's 1997-98 club. In 1965, Northeastern placed third and in 1998, the Huskies finished fourth.
Madigan in the Beanpot
Northeastern head coach
Jim Madigan played and coached in the Huskies' golden era of Beanpot success. Madigan has direct involvement with three of NU's four Beanpot championships, two as a student-athlete (1984, 1985) and one as an assistant coach (1988). Madigan actually scored a goal in one of Northeastern's two victories over BU in the Beanpot, including the 4-3 victory on Feb. 8, 1983. Trailing 3-0, Madigan scored the Huskies' first goal, sparking a four-goal flurry for the win.
Second go-round in the Beanpot
NU coaches in their second season at the helm have never placed higher than third in the Beanpot. Below is a list of finish and year of each second-year head coach:
• Herb Gallagher (1954 – 4th place)
• Jim Bell (1957 – 4th place)
• Fernie Flaman (1972 – 4th place)
• Don McKenney (1991 – 3rd place)
• Ben Smith (1993 – 3rd place)
• Bruce Crowder (1998 – 4th place)
• Greg Cronin (2007 – 3rd place)
Tough on the Terriers
Captain
Vinny Saponari has scored the last two game-winning goals against his former club Boston University. The Powder Springs, Ga., native netted the walk-off winner in overtime against the Terriers in the season finale last season before marking the game-winner with 2:03 left in regulation on Jan. 18. Saponari has scored seven game-winning goals in his career and three as a Husky. The game winner at Agganis Arena marked his first of the season.
Comm Ave. chronicles
Before Northeastern knocked off Boston University on Jan. 18 at Agganis Arena, the Huskies downed BU in the 2011-12 season finale at Matthews Arena on March 3, 2012, 5-4, in overtime (both game winners by
Vinny Saponari). The last time Northeastern defeated the Terriers in consecutive regular season games dates back to Jan. 3-17, 1989. NU beat BU, 6-4, on Matthews Arena on Jan. 3 before taking out the Terriers, 4-1, on Jan. 17 at BU. In addition, Northeastern's six goals at BU on Jan. 18 are the most on Terriers' ice since Feb. 28, 2004 and most ever at Agganis Arena.
A lot mo-rra Morra
Senior
Steve Morra broke his scoreless string on Jan. 25 against UMass Lowell, potting his first-career goal in his 41st-career game. The Bristol, R.I., native followed that with his first-career multi-point outing the following night at UMass Lowell.
Streakers
Cody Ferriero just had his seven-game point streak put to rest against UNH on Feb. 1, accounting for 11 poits (7-4-11) during that tear. Ferriero matched
Vinny Saponari's season best seven-game tear from Nov. 2 to Nov. 23 in which the captain notched eight points (3-5-8). Saponari is in the midst of another tear, scoring in his last five outings with a point total of two goals and five assists.
Rookie ruler
Heading into Friday's game against New Hampshire,
Kevin Roy is tied with Bentley's Andrew Gladiuk for the highest points per game average (1.17 ppg) amongst all rookies in all of college hockey. Roy is also second for the most total points (27) amongst any first-year skater. Miami's Riley Barber and Gladiuk ecah have 28 points.
Roy-rking his rookie magic
Kevin Roy has scored 26 points (12-14-26) in 22 games as a rookie. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec native's 20-point benchmark stands as the seventh-consecutive season an incoming Husky has scored 20 points in a season, starting in 2006-07 with Chad Costello (11-11-22). Roy is the fastest to 20 points as a rookie since Jason Guerriero hit that same mark in his 18th-career game during the 2001-02 season.
Reiding up on Reid
Sophomore
Adam Reid attained his first-career multi-point game in his 52nd-career outing with a goal and an assist at Boston University on Jan. 18. The Chino Hills, Calif., native followed that up with another goal against Boston College on Jan. 19 to notch his second career goal-scoring streak.
Rawlings rising in the records
After his season-high 42-save performance against Maine on Jan. 11,
Chris Rawlings surpassed Brad Thiessen's (2006-09) mark of 3,166 stops for the second most saves all-time at Northeastern and has amassed 3,266 career saves heading into Monday's game against BU. Rawlings is also now third in the NU annals in games played (114) and trails Keni Gibson's (2001-05) mark of 115 games played by just one game. The North Delta, British Columbia native needs 291 more saves to break Bruce Racine's (1984-88) school record of 3,557. Rawlings needs to average just over 26 saves per game, not counting the postseason, to set the NU standard in saves.
Four for Ferriero
Cody Ferriero turned in a historic night for Northeastern in a 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29. The Essex, Mass., native scored four goals in all, including three power play tallies in the second period. Ferriero's four-goal outburst is the first in NU history since Ken Manchurek turned the trick on March 6, 1982 (vs. Boston Univesity), a gap of 11,256 days or almost 31 years. Ferriero's incredible benchmark stands as just the third four-goal game in the NCAA this season.
Hats off on the power play
Cody Ferriero's four-goal performance on Dec. 29 was highlighted by three consecutive power play tallies, all in the second period, in a span of 8:59. He is the first player in modern Northeastern history to score three-straight power play goals in a single period. The last time a Husky scored consecutive power play goals was when Wade MacLeod turned the trick in a 7-7 tie at Boston College on Feb. 18, 2011. Only one other skater in college hockey has scored three power play goals in a game (Minnesota State's Chase Grant vs. Alabama-Huntsville on Oct. 12, 2012).
Three the hard way
Cody Ferriero's three power play goal outburst was the first for Northeastern in almost 26 years. Dan McGillis scored three power play goals in a game on Jan. 27, 1996 against Brown. Ferriero's trifecta also came all in one period. The last time a Husky scored three goals in a period was Ryan Ginand on Nov. 4, 2005 against UNH.
Six pack of history
Cody Ferriero backed up his four-goal performance (Dec. 29, 2012) with two more tallies in his following outing against Bentley on Jan. 5, 2013. Ferriero is the first player in modern history to record six goals over the span of two games. Rod Isbister (1982-86) scored six goals over the course of three games from Jan. 30 to Feb. 6, 1986, but no Husky in the modern era has netted an average of three goals in two games.
Trick-eration
Cody Ferriero has now accounted for two hat tricks in his career, with his first taking place at Vermont on Jan. 27, 2012. Ryan Ginand is the last Husky to collect two hat tricks in a career. Ginand scored three goals in a game against UNH on Nov. 4, 2005 and against Providence on Jan. 24, 2009.
Take five
Kevin Roy tallied five points (1-4-5) in the Huskies' 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29, marking the first time a Northeastern player has scored five points in a game since both Mike Morris (2-4-6) and Jason Guerriero (2-3-5) turned the trick against UMass on March 5, 2005. Roy's five-point performance stands as the NCAA's third occurrence thus far in the NCAA.
Help me help you
Kevin Roy became the first player to record four assists in a game since
Ludwig Karlsson in a 9-2 win at Notre Dame on Dec. 2, 2011. Roy assisted on all four of Ferriero's goals at Harvard on Dec. 29.
It's been an honor
Following their offensive explosion at Harvard on Dec. 29,
Cody Ferriero and
Kevin Roy were honored as the Hockey East Athletic Republic Co-Player of the Week and Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Jan. 2. On Jan. 3, Roy was named Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Month in December after averaging 2.33 points per game (3-4-7).
Roy becomes Northeastern's first Rookie of the Month since Brad Thiessen took the honor in January 2007. Northeastern has gathered six Hockey East weekly awards this season, including Roy's Rookie of the Week and NU's Team of the Week awards on Oct. 15 and
Bryan Mountain's Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 29.
Seeing red
Northeastern's 5-1 win over the Crimson on Dec. 29 marked the Huskies' first win in six trips to Harvard and its first since Jan. 12, 1978, when the Huskies won, 14-5. The game also marked NU's first journey to the Bright Hockey Center since Dec. 19, 1999.
Success after two
This season, NU is 7-1-1 when possessing the lead after two periods of play.
Playing catch up
Northeastern surrendered the first goal in a 5-1 triumph at Harvard on Dec. 29, marking just the second time the Huskies recovered after giving up the first tally of the game. The first game in which NU gave up the first goal and won came against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 11 (3-1).
Power play push
Through 22 games,
Kevin Roy is tied for second in Hockey East for power play points. Roy has tallied 10 points (2-8-10) on the power play, averaging 0.43 power play points per game.
