Northeastern vs. Boston College in the Beanpot
Northeastern will make its 15th Beanpot championship appearance against Boston College on Monday night at the TD Garden. Monday marks the fourth Beanpot title bout between the NU and BC with two of those affairs going into overtime. The Huskies are 1-2 in the previous three installments with the lone victory occurring when Wayne “Beanpot” Turner netted the overtime winner 2:47 into the extra frame 33 years ago to the day on Feb. 11. The last time NU and BC skated for Boston bragging rights was on Feb. 14, 2011. Wade MacLeod tied the game up, 6-6, with 1:16 remaining in regulation before BC's Jimmy Hayes dashed the Huskies' hopes at the 6:00-minute mark into overtime. When these two teams meet in the Beanpot championship, shortage of offense is not an issue. NU and BC have never combined to score fewer than nine goals in a title bout (1980: NU, 5-4 • 1983: BC, 8-2 • 2011: BC, 7-6).

Northeastern in the Beanpot finals
Northeastern has reached three of the last five Beanpot championship games (2009, 2011, 2013); the most since making three of seven title games from 1999 to 2005. The Huskies best all-time stretch game when they made six of nine title games from 1980 to 1988, winning each of their four Beanpots within that span. Northeastern is 4-10 all-time in Beanpot championship games. Jim Madigan will coach in his first Beanpot title game, becoming the Huskies' first second-year head coach in program history to make it to the title bout. BC's Jerry York will coach in his 13th Beanpot championship game. Only six of Northeastern's 26 eligible skaters have had the prestige of skating in the title game, including Drew Ellement, Garrett Vermeersch, Braden Pimm, Cody Ferriero, Robbie Vrolyk and Chris Rawlings. No current Husky was alive the last time NU raised its most recent Beanpot trophy.

Back-to-back Beanpot games
With the cancellation of Northeastern's game at UMass on Friday, Feb. 8, the 61st Beanpot Tournament marks the first time the Huskies have skated in consecutive Beanpot contests since the 1990 tournament. Northeastern did not have a game in between the 1988 Beanpot Tournament, either.

Date of destiny
February 11th has been especially kind to Northeastern. In seven career Beanpot games on Feb. 11, Northeastern holds a 5-2 record, including two Beanpot titles (1980 and 1985) and a 2-0 record against Boston College (including the 5-4 OT win in the 1980 Beanpot championship).

#MondayNightRoy
Thanks to Kevin Roy's first career hat trick in his first-ever Beanpot Tournament appearance, the Huskies will play in their 15th Beanpot title game. Roy became the first rookie skater to net a hat trick in his first Beanpot appearance since Boston College's Krys Kolanos on Feb. 7, 2000, in a 6-1 win over NU. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native became the first Husky to score a hat trick in the Beanpot since Mike Ryan netted three against Harvard on Feb. 8, 2002. Roy is also the first freshman to score the opening goal of the Beanpot since Boston College's Brock Bradford on Feb. 6, 2006.

Rookie ruler
Heading into Monday's game against Boston College, Kevin Roy is college hockey's top scorer amongst all first-year skaters. Roy's 30 points and 1.25 ppg is tops amongst all freshmen, as does his 0.62 goals per game. Roy is two points ahead of Bentley's Andrew Gladiuk and Miami's Riley Barber. Roy also leads all rookies in shots on goal with 108.

Second go-round in the Beanpot
With Northeastern's first round Beanpot triumph over BU, Jim Madigan became NU's first ever second-year coach to win a semifinal game. Prior to Feb. 4, 2013, NU coaches in their second season at the helm had never placed higher than third in the Beanpot. Below is a list of finish and year of each second-year head coach:
• Herb Gallagher (1954 – 4th place)
• Jim Bell (1957 – 4th place)
• Fernie Flaman (1972 – 4th place)
• Don McKenney (1991 – 3rd place)
• Ben Smith (1993 – 3rd place)
• Bruce Crowder (1998 – 4th place)
• Greg Cronin (2007 – 3rd place)

Third time's the charm
Vinny Saponari's game-winning goal at Boston University on Jan. 18, 2013, carved out a special niche in Huskies' history. With that win, Northeastern has defeated all three Beanpot participants during the regular season before the actual start of the Beanpot Tournament. This has occurred just three times in school history. NU accomplished that feat under Jim Bell during the 1964-65 season followed by Bruce Crowder's 1997-98 club. In 1965, Northeastern placed third and in 1998, the Huskies finished fourth.

Raining on the Terrier's reign
Before the Huskies' 3-2 victory over Boston University in the semifinal round of the 2013 Beanpot, Northeastern's last win against the Terriers in the tournament occurred the last time NU raised the 'Pot: Feb. 8, 1988. 9,128 days transpired between Beanpot wins against BU, snapping a 15-game BU winning streak. Northeastern's win against BU means this will be the first Terriers' graduting class to not win a Beanpot since 1965. With the semifinal win, NU has defeated BU three-straight times, marking the first time that's happened since the 1988-89 season.

Madigan in the Beanpot
Northeastern head coach Jim Madigan played and coached in the Huskies' golden era of Beanpot success. Madigan has direct involvement with three of NU's four Beanpot championships, two as a student-athlete (1984, 1985) and one as an assistant coach (1988). Madigan actually scored a goal in one of Northeastern's two victories over BU in the Beanpot, including the 4-3 victory on Feb. 8, 1983. Trailing 3-0, Madigan scored the Huskies' first goal, sparking a four-goal flurry for the win.

Tough on the Terriers
Captain Vinny Saponari has scored the last two game-winning goals against his former club Boston University prior to NU's semifinal victory. The Powder Springs, Ga., native netted the walk-off winner in overtime against the Terriers in the season finale last season before marking the game-winner with 2:03 left in regulation on Jan. 18. Saponari has scored seven game-winning goals in his career and three as a Husky. The game-winner at Agganis Arena marked his first of the season.

Comm Ave. chronicles
Northeastern's six goals at BU on Jan. 18 are the most on Terriers' ice since Feb. 28, 2004 and most ever at Agganis Arena.

A lot mor-ra Morra
Senior Steve Morra broke his scoreless string on Jan. 25 against UMass Lowell, potting his first-career goal in his 41st-career game. The Bristol, R.I., native followed that with his first-career multi-point outing the following night at UMass Lowell.

Streakers
Cody Ferriero just had his seven-game point streak put to rest against UNH on Feb. 1, accounting for 11 points (7-4-11) during that tear. Ferriero matched Vinny Saponari's season-best seven-game tear from Nov. 2 to Nov. 23 in which the captain notched eight points (3-5-8). Saponari is in the midst of another tear, scoring in his last six outings with a point total of two goals and six assists.

Roy-rking his rookie magic
Kevin Roy has scored 30 points (15-15-30) in 24 games as a rookie. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec native's 30-point benchmark stands as the seventh-consecutive season an incoming Husky has scored 20 or more points in a season, starting in 2006-07 with Chad Costello (11-11-22). Roy is the fastest to 20 points as a rookie since Jason Guerriero hit that same mark in his 18th-career game during the 2001-02 season.

Beanpot facts
• 2013 will mark Northeastern's 15th Beanpot finals appearance and its third in the last five years. The Huskies have faced Boston College in the championship only three times previously, going 1-2 with their lone win coming in their first Beanpot-winning season in 1980 (6-5 OT).

• Northeastern is 7-12 all-time in Beanpot games that extend into overtime, including a 1-3 mark in championship games. The Huskies' only win came against Boston College in 1980.

• February 11th has been especially kind to Northeastern. In seven career Beanpot games on Feb. 11, Northeastern holds a 5-2 record, including two Beanpot titles (1980 and 1985) and a 2-0 record against Boston College (including the 5-4 OT win in the 1980 Beanpot championship). The Huskies have scored four or more goals in six of those seven games (only exception: 5-3 loss to BU in the 2002 Beanpot Championship).

• The last time the men's and women's teams both beat BU in the semifinals was 1983. The last time both programs beat BU in the same Beanpot (regardless of round) was 1988.

• The 2013 Men's and Women's Beanpot Championship will both feature Northeastern vs. Boston College. The same finals matchup has occurred only ONE other time in Beanpot history. In 2007, BU's and BC's women's teams played in the title game in 2007.

• If Northeastern defeats BC on Monday night, it will be the first the men's team beat both BC and BU twice in the same season since 1989-90.

• The last time Northeastern beat BU in three consecutive games was when they beat BU a school-record eight consecutive times from 1987-89 (3/10/87, 3-2 at BU; 11/10/87, 7-3 at BU; 1/19/88, 2-1 vs. BU; 2/8/88, 6-3 vs. BU (Beanpot); 2/24/88, 5-2 vs. BU; 10/29/88, 7-6 at BU; 1/3/89, 6-4 vs. BU; 1/17/89, 4-1 at BU).

• In three of Northeastern's four Beanpot-winning seasons (1980, 1985 and 1988), the Huskies had to go through both BC and BU. The lone exception (1984) came when Northeastern beat Harvard in the semifinals before dispatching BU in the championship game.

• The last time a freshman led Beanpot in scoring was Boston College's Johnny Gaudreau (2011, 2-2-4).

• Of the six goalies to win multiple Eberly Awards, three played for Northeastern (Brad Thiessen (2008-09), Marc Robitaille (1997-98), and Bruce Racine (1985 & 1988). That stands as the most of any Beanpot school.

Chris Rawlings has the potential to be the third Northeastern goalie to win the Eberly Award twice without winning a title, joining Brad Thiessen (NU, 2008-09) and Marc Robitaille (1997-98).

• Northeastern has been outscored 71-47 all-time in championship games. That being said, Northeastern does not have the lowest goals per Beanpot Championship game average of the four Beanpot Schools. In order of highest to lowest goals per game in the Beanpot BU (4.16), BC (3.55), NU (3.36), and Harvard (2.96).

• Northeastern and BC have never combined to score fewer than nine goals in a Beanpot championship game (1980: NU 5-4 BC (OT); 1983: BC 8-2 NU; 2011: BC 7-6 NU (OT))

• Should the Huskies win the 2013 Beanpot, they would have one of the lowest winning percentages of any team entering the Beanpot tournament. More specifically, they would have the fifth-lowest winning percentage entering the Beanpot:

Lowest Win % of Beanpot champs entering the Beanpot
1980  Northeastern 3-11   .214
1973  Boston Univ. 6-15   .286
1981  Harvard 5-11   .313
1985  Northeastern  11-19   .367
2013  Northeastern 8-13-3   .396

• Nine of the last 10 Beanpot championship games have been decided by one goal, and six of those games have required overtime. Northeastern came out on the losing end in three of those games, two by way of extra time (BU in 2005 and BC in 2011).

• Northeastern has never won the Beanpot after finishing in fourth place the previous year, but five Huskies' teams -- in 1958, 1967, 1987, 1999, 2009 and 2013 -- have reached the championship after losing the prior tournament's consolation game. Here is a year-by-year breakdown of teams to reach championship after finishing fourth in previous year:
NU: 1958, 1967, 1987, 1999, 2009, 2013
BC: 1959, 1961, 1976, 1986, 1994
BU: 1962, 1964, 2012
HU: 1966, 1968, 1989, 1998

• Only five times in Beanpot history has a team won the tournament after finishing in fourth a year before: 1959 (BC), 1961 (BC), 1976 (BC), 1989 (Harvard) and 1994 (BC).

• Including this year, NU has entered the Beanpot coming off a loss and reached the championship game eight times (1958, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1999, 2009, 2011, 2013).

• Defending Beanpot champions are 23 for 59 in attempts to repeat as champions. That is only a 39 percent success rate. Since 1990, defending champions have been more successful at any point in the Beanpot's history in emerging as repeat champions. Thanks in large part to BU's string of 14 championships in 18 years, Beanpot champions are 12-11 in their attempt to repeat since the start of the '90s.

• Monday's win marks only the third time Northeastern has beaten BU in the semifinals; the Huskies have beaten Boston College and Harvard four and eight times, respectively, to reach the championship game.

• Northeastern is 9-32 all-time against Boston College in the Beanpot, including a 1-2 mark in championship games. The Huskies last beat the Eagles in the 2009 semifinals, 6-1. The only Beanpot school Northeastern has fewer wins against is Boston University (8). If Northeastern wins the Beanpot, head coach Jim Madigan (2011-2013) will match Boston University bench boss Jack Parker among active coaches for fewest years behind the bench before winning a Beanpot title. Parker took over as the Terriers' skipper in 1973 before winning his first Beanpot in 1975. Boston College coach Jerry York took seven tries - from 1995 to 2001 - to bring the trophy back to Chestnut Hill. Harvard coach Ted Donato began coaching the Crimson in 2004 and has never won a Beanpot.

• Northeastern has reached three of the last five Beanpot championship games, its most since making three of seven title games from 1999 to 2005. The Huskies' best all-time stretch came when they made six of nine title games from 1980 to 1988, winning each of their four Beanpots within that span.

• Northeastern's 25-year Beanpot drought is actually not the longest in school history. Beginning in 1952, the Huskies went 28 years before winning their first Beanpot in 1980, the longest winless span of any team in the history of the tournament. If the Huskies win, the Crimson will have the longest active title drought (20 years), followed by Boston University (four) and Boston College (one).

• After making 32 saves in Monday's semifinal, senior goaltender Chris Rawlings is 41 and 42 saves away from tying and setting, respectively, the all-time record for career Beanpot saves set by former Husky netminder Bruce Racine (237, 1985-88).

• If Raphael Girard makes 50 saves in Monday's consolation, he will set the record for most saves by a team in a single tournament (currently 91):
Current Eberly standings:
Goalie  Goals Allowed  Saves  Save %
Rawlings  2  32  0.941
Milner  1  19  0.950
O'Connor  3  23  0.885
Girard  4  42  0.913

• When it comes to the second Monday, there's truly no way of telling who may take home the 'Pot. In the 60-year history of the Beanpot, only 26 of 60 winners of the consolation games lost to the eventual Beanpot champions in the semifinals. This shows that the “better” team doesn't always emerge victorious.

• Recent rookies to score three points in a game are BC's Johnny Gaudreau (2012 semifinals vs. Northeastern (2-1-3); BU's Kevin Shattenkirk (2008 semifinals vs. Boston College (0-3-3); BU's Colin Wilson (2008 consolation game vs. Northeastern (2-1-3); BU's Jason Lawrence (2006 semifinals vs. Harvard (1-2-3).

• In the 15 years in which Northeastern has reached the championship game, the Huskies have had a losing record in nine of them. The highest and lowest winning percentages with which Northeastern entered a Beanpot tournament and reached the championship game was .680 (17-6-2) in 2009 and .177 (3-14) in 1958. Including this year, the Huskies have entered the Beanpot with a winning percentage of .370 or lower and reached the championship game nine times, winning the title in two of those instances (1980 and 1985).

• Northeastern is 6-27 all-time when facing the defending champion in the Beanpot, including a 1-5 mark in championship games.

• Only twice before has Northeastern played in the championship against a team that has won multiple consecutive Beanpots, going 1-1 in those contests. In 1988 (Northeastern's most recent championship-winning season) the Huskies met BU when the Terriers were on a two-year title streak, and in 1999 Northeastern and BU squared off after the Terriers had won the previous four Beanpots.

• The captain of every Beanpot team registered a point on Monday, including Vinny Saponari (0-1-1), Wade Megan (0-1-1), Pat Mullane (0-1-1) and Danny Biega (1-0-1).

• Four years marks the third-longest Beanpot drought in BU history; the Terriers went six years without a title (1952-57) after the tournament's inception before winning their first in 1958 but were forced to wait another eight years before bringing the Beanpot back to Comm Ave in 1966.

• NU Beanpot championship game-by-game record:
1958: BU 9-3 NU
1967: BU 4-0 NU
1980: NU 5-4 BC (OT)
1983: BC 8-2 NU
1984: NU 5-2 BU
1985: NU 4-2 BU
1987: BU 4-3 NU (OT)
1988: NU 6-3 BU
1996: BU 11-4 NU
1999: BU 4-2 NU
2002: BU 5-3 NU
2005: BU 3-2 NU (OT)
2009: BU 5-2 NU
2011: BC 7-6 NU (OT)
