BROOKLINE, Mass. – Northeastern shot out of the gate with two runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 4-2 win on Tuesday over crosstown rival Boston College at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies (12-11, 2-7 CAA) earned their second win over the Eagles (3-19, 0-8 ACC) this season on the arm of
Isaac Lippert (2-0, 2.14 ERA), who threw 7.0 scoreless innings allowing just four hits and striking out four. Senior co-captain
Dylan Maki earned the 13th save of his career, putting him in sole possession of the all-time Northeastern record.
The Huskies started off strong, thanks to a leadoff triple from
Aaron Barbosa (2-for-5, 1R). Just after the junior boomed his second triple of the season, DH
John Puttress (0-for-3, 1RBI, 1R) drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Huskies in just two at bats. Hitting in the No. 3 hole, sophomore
Jason Vosler (2-for-3, 1RBI) hit NU's second extra-base hit, bringing Barbosa home on an RBI double to center. With Puttress on third,
Rob Fonseca (1-for-3, 1RBI) sent a sacrifice fly deep into center to bring another run across, making it 2-0 in the Huskies' favor.
Then Lippert took over. The sophomore, making his third start of the season, kept the BC bats cornered, not allowing anything more dangerous than a single until the sixth inning. Blake Butera drove a fly ball past
Connor Lyons in center, but Lippert held steady with a strikeout and an induced grounder to end the frame.
In the bottom of the next inning, with a 2-0 lead,
Mike Piscopo, who was making his first career start at third base, reached on an error.
Michael Foster (1-for-2, 1R) then doubled to right center, but Piscopo was caught in time at home for the inning's first out. After a single from Barbosa, Puttress grounded out to second, but plated Foster to extend the lead to 3-0.
BC got a run back in the top of the eighth when
Mike Fitzgerald came on in relief of Lippert. After yielding a walk, Fitzgerald gave up a hit and a run over the next two at bats, but the freshman, making his first appearance since March 8, struck out the last batter of the inning to prevent any more damage.
Connor Lyons (1-for-3, 1R) opened things up in the home half of the frame with a booming triple that reached the right center field wall on the first pitch he saw.
Brad Burcroff (0-for-4) grounded to third, which kept Lyons on the bag, but
Josh Treff (1-for-3, 1RBI) singled to center, just out of the reach of Tom Bourdon, to score the Husky junior to make it 4-1.
Dylan Maki made his way to the mound in position to close -- and to secure the all-time NU record -- in the top of the ninth. The senior, however, gave up a single and a double in back-to-back at bats to make things interesting at 4-2. But Maki stepped up and struck out two of the next three Eagles at the plate. A walk to Gabriel Hernandez chucked the bases, forcing the Gloucester native to really earn the save, but
Connor Lyons made sure the record was his and the win was Northeastern's with a brilliant sliding catch in center to end BC's chances at a comeback.
The Huskies, who have just finished a run of five games in five days, will be back on the diamond this weekend when CAA foe James Madison comes to Boston for a three-game series.
