BOSTON — The Northeastern women's rowing team will open the 2013 season on Saturday at Central Florida. The Huskies will face the Knights in four races on Lake Pickett, near Orlando, Fla., beginning at 9:15 a.m.
Saturday's regatta concludes a week-long training trip to Orlando for head coach
Joe Wilhelm's team. The morning will kick off with the novice eight race at 9:15. The varsity four will row at 9:30, followed by the second varsity at 9:45, and the varsity eight at 10:00.
Northeastern is coming off a strong 2012 campaign. The Red and Black last captured its second-consecutive CAA championship. Four Northeastern rowers were named All-CAA First Team and head coach
Joe Wilhelm was named CAA Coach of the Year for the second straight season. In their final regatta of the 2012 season—the annual EAWRC Championship Regatta—the Huskies earned medals in four grand finals, including a silver-medal showing in the varsity eight race. The second-place finish was the Huskies' best-ever in 32 appearances in the East's most prestigious rowing event.
Following Saturday's race, the Huskies will return home to Boston and will next race on March 23, when they take to the famed Charles River for the annual Beanpot, facing Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, and MIT. NU also will compete against Holy Cross on the day.
