BOSTON -- The Northeastern women's ice hockey team officially closed the 2012-13 season last week with the annual team banquet in Newton, Mass.
Kendall Coyne was named the Team MVP while the Huskies celebrated the careers of seniors
Siena Falino,
Casie Fields,
Rachel Llanes and
Casey Pickett.
Coyne was named the Team MVP after rewriting the Northeastern record book during the 2012-13 season, leading the Huskies with 68 points (37 goals, 31 assists) and becoming the first Husky since 1988 to record at least 65 points in a season en route to AHCA/CCM Second Team All-American honors. Coyne was also named a Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award top-ten finalist on Feb. 28 and a Hockey East First Team All-Star on Mar. 8.
Coyne is the first Husky in 13 years to record at least 45 points in back-to-back seasons (Hillary Witt in 1998-99 and 1999-00), and is the first NU player since 2002 to post at least 25 goals in consecutive seasons (Brooke Whitney in 2000-01 and 2001-02). Coyne, along with Boston College's Alex Carpenter, shattered the league record for conference points in a season, previously held by Sadie Wright Ward in 2005-06.
The Palos Heights, Ill. native finished the season on a career-long 16-game point streak (21 goals, 16 assists), including 12 multi-point games, six multi-goal games and two hat tricks. A seven-time Athletic Republic Player of the Week honoree, Coyne became the 22nd player in program history to record 100 career points, and only the third to accomplish the feat in less than two seasons with the team.
Taking home Rookie of the Year honors was freshman
Paige Savage, who concluded the season with nine goals and 14 assists in 33 games played. She was a two-time Pro Ambitions Player of the Week and was also named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month in February. The Johns Creek, Ga. native was tied for 17th in the nation in points per game among rookies (0.70), as well as sixth in Hockey East in freshman scoring. Savage had her biggest game of the season on Jan. 4 at No. 2 Clarkson when she played a factor in all four NU goals (one goal, three assists), helping the Huskies erase a two-goal third period deficit in a 4-3 victory.
Junior
Kelly Wallace was named the Kathryn Waldo 7th Player of the Year after a breakout season in 2012-13. Wallace had the best season of her career, having more than tripled her scoring output from last season (seven points), with 16 goals and 12 assists in 36 games this season. She scored twice against Vermont on Mar. 2, marking the first time since Nov. 14, 2009 that she's recorded a multi-goal game.
Ann Doherty claimed the Team Academic Award with a 3.63 grade point average as a behavioral neuroscience major. On the ice, Doherty tallied six assists in 20 games played. The Park Ridge, Ill. native returned from a lower body injury for the Hockey East playoffs, helping secure the Northeastern defensive corps.
Fields, meanwhile, earned the Coaches Award in her final season with the Huskies for her leadership and dedication on and off the ice. Fields played in 32 games, tallying one goal and one assist.
Northeastern finished the 2012-13 season 23-11-2 record in 2012-13, including the program's 16th Beanpot championship and second appearance in the Hockey East title game in the last three years.
