Busy weekend on the Charles awaits women’s rowing

WATCH LIVE: Saturday  |  Sunday

BOSTON — The Northeastern University women's rowing team is gearing up for a busy weekend on the Charles River. The Huskies will face Harvard-Radcliffe and Yale on Saturday morning before turning their attention to the Women's Beanpot on Sunday morning. The program also will celebrate its founder and first coach, Janet Swanson, on Saturday when it christens a new varsity eight boat named in her honor.

Northeastern, which is coming off gold and bronze medal-winning performances at the Knecht Cup, will open the busy weekend on Saturday with races against Harvard-Radcliffe and Yale. The days events will commence at 7:24 a.m. with the varsity four B race. The third varsity eight will launch at 8:12, followed by the varsity four A at 8:36, the second varsity eight at 9:24, and the varsity eight at 9:48.

Harvard Athletics will offer a free, live video stream of the varsity four A and varsity eight races. The live production, which can be accessed here, begins at 8:00 a.m.

Following Saturday's races, Northeastern Athletics will honor Swanson, a Northeastern alumna who enjoyed a 16-year coaching career at her alma mater, leading both the rowing and swimming programs. To read more about the christening and to register for the event, click here.

The Red and Black will return to the Charles on Sunday for the Women's Beanpot. NU will be joined on the river by local rivals Boston College, Boston University, Harvard-Radcliffe, Holy Cross, and MIT. Racing begins at 8 a.m. with the varsity four B. The third varsity eight will follow at 8:20, the varsity four A at 8:40, the second varsity eight at 9:00, and the varsity eight at 9:20. An awards ceremony on the Boston University boathouse dock is scheduled for 9:40.

Northeastern Athletics will offer a live video stream of the Beanpot races on its GoNUxstream portal. To watch the races, free of charge, click here.

This weekend will also mark the beginning of the “Row for Boston” campaign, as six colleges from the Boston area race on the Charles River for the Muri Cup and Women's Beanpot. Rather than wear individual school uniforms this weekend, every rower participating in the races will wear the same "Row for Boston" shirt as a symbol of strength and unity. The shirt features the oar designs of each individual college, all coming together to form the word Boston.
