BOSTON – Northeastern women's ice hockey's
Kelly Wallace, women's basketball's A'lece Mark and swimming and diving's Candace Young took some time to give back to the community last weekend when the two spoke at the Mayor's Youth Council Youth Fitness Challenge in Roxbury, Mass.
“I was happy to be able to share my experience about reaching my goal of becoming a Division I student-athlete,” Wallace said. “I was looking at these kids who are not sure where their life will lead them, and I was hoping to give them motivation and advice. If you want something, the only person that can stop you is yourself.”
In efforts to promote physical activity and healthy living for teens, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and the MYC neighborhood representatives offered teenagers in Boston the opportunity to take advantage of a unique health fair experience. At the event, teen participants were able to sample various types of physical activity, participate in fitness challenges, try new healthy foods, learn how to create healthy snacks, and earn prizes for their participation.
“They just need to believe in themselves and that the opportunities are endless,” Wallace said. “I was impressed of the number of kids who showed up to the fitness challenge because it was a voluntary event.
“I always love giving back to the community because I feel so grateful for the opportunities I've been given and I think it is so important as a student-athlete to give back,” Wallace said. “That's something (Northeastern Athletic Director)
Peter Roby really emphasizes when we get to Northeastern.”
Wallace enters her final year with the Huskies in 2013-14 after posting 16 goals and 12 assists in 36 games played last season. The Libertyville, Ill. native quadrupled her scoring from 2011-12 and was also named the Athletic Republic Player of the Week on Nov. 12 after notching two goals and two assists in a weekend set with Vermont.
