BOSTON—The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) released the women's basketball 2013-14 conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 20. Northeastern will open the 16-game conference slate on Thursday, Jan. 9, on the road and will play each conference opponent twice, concluding the season at home on Wednesday, March 5.
Northeastern's 17-13 overall record in 2012-13 marked the most successful season of head coach Daynia La-Force's seven-year run on Huntington Avenue. NU also finished 10-8 in CAA play, garnering a fifth-place league finish, its highest since joining the conference in 2005. With a league-leading nine-win turnaround from 2011-12, La-Force became the second women's basketball coach in Northeastern history to earn a CAA coach of the year honor.
The Huskies tip off the conference slate in Wilmington, N.C., when they take on UNCW, which went 1-1 against Northeastern last season. The Seahawks finished 3-15 in CAA play and 5-26 overall.
NU continues its road stint into the weekend when it faces Towson at the Tigers' brand new basketball facility, Tiger Arena, on Sunday, Jan. 12. The Huskies also split both games with Towson last year, with their lone defeat resulting in an overtime thriller, 73-69, at the old Towson Center Arena.
Following the Towson contest, CAA newcomer College of Charleston visits Boston on Jan. 19 trailed by a contest with Hofstra at Cabot Center on Jan. 23. The game will mark the first contest between Northeastern and Charleston. The Huskies went undefeated against the Pride during the regular season last year, but lost to the No. 5 seed in the first round of the CAA tournament, 57-52.
Northeastern will travel for another two-game road tour where it plays two of the top three CAA finishers, Drexel and Delaware, respectively. Delaware was the only CAA team to crack the AP top 25 during the 2012 season and finished first in the conference. The Huskies dropped their lone game against Drexel, 85-73.
The Huskies will begin February with two home contests against UNCW (Feb. 2) and Towson (Feb. 4), both for the second time.
La-Force's squad then embarks on another two-game road swing through Harrisonburg, Va., and Charleston, S.C. The Huskies face James Madison on Friday, Feb. 7, before traveling to Charleston, to compete with the Cougars for the second time, in a Sunday, Feb. 9, tilt. Madison, which finished second in conference play last year, went 25-11 on the season, just edging out NU by three points in the lone meeting of 2012-13.
William & Mary visits Cabot Center on Thursday, Feb. 13, to compete in the first matchup of the season with the Huskies. NU holds the upper hand against W&M, leading the series with a 7-5 mark. Northeastern went into overtime during both contests with the Tribe last year, splitting the series, 1-1. NU will follow that up with a road game at Hofstra, Thursday, Feb. 20, and a home game with Drexel on Sunday, Feb. 23.
The Red and Black will take one last road swing on Thursday, Feb. 27, to face William & Mary in the second game of the season series.
Northeastern will close out the conference slate with a two-game home stand against Delaware and James Madison on March 2 and March 5, respectively.
The CAA Women's Basketball Championship will be played March 13-16 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
