BOSTON -- Coming off a thrilling 3-2 win vs. No. 3/3 Minnesota last weekend, the Northeastern men's ice hockey team plays its final home game of 2014 on Wednesday night when the Huskies host Providence at 7 p.m. from Matthews Arena.

Recapping last Saturday's win against No. 3/3 Minnesota
Kevin Roy scored with 2:36 remaining in regulation, and Clay Witt made 25 saves in goal to lead Northeastern to a 3-2 victory against No. 3/3 Minnesota on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Dustin Darou and Brendan Collier also scored for Northeastern, their first goals as Huskies, who outshot the Gophers 40-27 in the game. Minnesota received power play tallies from Justin Kloos and Kyle Rau, while Adam Wilcox had 37 saves in goal.

History made at historic Matthews Arena
In addition to knocking off the No. 3 team in the nation on Saturday, the Huskies also made a bit of history with the win against Minnesota: the victory marked the 500th win all-time for Northeastern at Matthews Arena. NU is 500-477-70 (.511) all-time at Matthews, which has been the Huskies' only home in its 82-year history. Matthews Arena is the world's oldest multi-purpose athletic building and houses the world's oldest artificial ice sheet.

The all-time series with the Friars
Providence holds a 79-52-17 record in the all-time series with Northeastern that dates back to 1953. In recent seasons, however, the series has become more even a 3-3-4 in the last 10 games. The Huskies were 1-0-1 last season against PC, which included a 3-3 tie at Matthews when Providence was ranked fourth in the nation.

Scouting Providence
It's been a defensive story for the Friars this season as the team has only allowed 24 goals in 13 games, the second fewest in the league. PC is also third in scoring defense, giving up 1.85 goals per game. Jon Gillies is off to a hot start between the pipes in 2014-15. He has a goals against average of 1.87, third in the Hockey East, and has allowed just 18 goals, tied for the fewest in the conference. In more than 700 minutes of work, he has made 343 saves and boasts a save percentage of .940.

Pacing Providence is Trevor Mingoia, a junior forward with five goals and six assists on the season for a team-high 11 points. Four members of the team – Nick Saracino, Shane Luke, Mark Jankowski, and Tom Parisi – all have six points on the season.

Roy picks up Warrior Player of the Week honors
After scoring the game-winning goal against No. 3 Minnesota on Saturday night, winger Kevin Roy was named the Warrior Player of the Week on Monday. With just 2:36 seconds left in regulation, and his team tied with the Gophers, 2-2, Roy took matters into his own hands, scoring the game-winner to push the Huskies past the Gophers.

The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native is riding a three-game point streak after netting a marker last Friday night against Merrimack and two assists the next night, also against the Warriors. This is the fourth time in the junior's career he has been named the Warrior Player of the Week, and first time this season. Roy is second on the team with 10 points (three goals, seven assists), and boasts a team-high 46 shots.

Dominance at the dot
After being held to a 45.7% success rate (107-of-234) in the face-off circle in their first four games (55th in the nation), the Huskies have responded with a 55% clip (318-of-578) in their last nine games, which is fifth in the nation in that span.

NU has won more than 50% of its faceoffs in each of the last nine games, including a 68% mark on Nov. 22 against Merrimack in which the Huskies won 49-of-72 draws, the most face-off wins in a game for Northeastern since winning 51 against Niagara on Nov. 5, 2010. Mike McMurtry leads the nation in face-off percentage (minimum two faceoff attempts per team game) at 79.4%, winning 27-of-34 draws, while Nolan Stevens is close behind at seventh in the country (18-of-28, 64.3%). Stevens' brother, John, leads the team and is tied for 32nd in the nation with 131 face-off wins this season.

Northeastern's grade-A chances
The Huskies may not be finding the net as frequently as they would like through 12 games, but they've made the most of their chances from high percentage areas. Of Northeastern's 25 goals this season, 23 of them have come from the grade-A area (92%).

Streaking
Three Huskies will carry three-game point streaks into Wednesday night's game. Kevin Roy (two goals, two assists), Dalen Hedges (one goal, three assists) and Ryan Rosenthal (one goal, two assists) are all riding three-game streaks. It's the longest streaks of the season for Roy and Rosenthal, while Hedges had a four-game point streak (one goal, four assists) from Oct. 25 to Nov. 7.

Shuffling the deck
Looking to spark his club, Jim Madigan and the NU coaching staff have utilized 33 different line combinations at forward, and 16 combinations on defense through 13 games this season. Four Huskies have already made their collegiate debuts (Garret Cockerill, Trevor Owens, Dylan Sikura, Nolan Stevens) while two others have made their Northeastern debuts (Brendan Collier, Ryan Rosenthal).

In the last four games, the coaching staff has found some consistency in the lines of Kevin Roy, Dalen Hedges and Mike McMurtry (three goals, eight assists) and Nolan Stevens, John Stevens and Rosenthal (three goals, seven assists). Northeastern is 3-1-0 when those two lines are intact.

Power play hitting its stride
After starting the season 0-of-18 on the man advantage, the Northeastern power play has emerged in the last eight games, going 8-of-35 (22.9%), which is 13th in the nation and third in Hockey East in that span. NU has received power play tallies from eight different skaters, one of just 10 teams in the country to have done so.

Paying the price
On Nov. 2 at Quinnipiac, head coach Jim Madigan said that NU needed to do the little things necessary to win games. Since then, his team has responded by blocking 105 shots (15 blocks per game), which is tied for 13th in the nation in that span. Overall, Northeastern is 23rd in the country, and third in Hockey East, with 177 blocked shots, including a team-high 20 from Garret Cockerill.

Darou finds the net
Junior defenseman Dustin Darou netted his first collegiate goal on Nov. 29 against No. 3 Minnesota with a first period tally to tie the game at one. Darou is the fourth Husky this season to record his first collegiate goal, joining Garret Cockerill, Jarrett Fennell and Dylan Sikura.

The road ahead
Northeastern will be back in action on Saturday when the Huskies complete the home-and-home set with Providence at Schneider Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be aired on OSN.
