BOSTON – The Northeastern baseball team opened its 2014 campaign with a 10-2 loss at No. 23 Texas A&M Friday night, but the Huskies will look to bounce back Saturday in the second game of a three-game series.
Northeastern (0-1) catcher
Josh Treff (1-for-4, 2B, 2RBI) knocked in a pair of runs and second baseman
Michael Foster (2-for-4, SB) collected two hits, but the Aggies took advantage of three NU defensive miscues in front of 5,506 at Blue Bell Park.
A&M (1-0) plated three runs in the first inning thanks in part to two Husky errors, but NU answered right back with a pair of runs in the second.
Brad Burcroff (1-for-4, R) and
Joey Scambia (1-for-2, R) each singled, and Treff smacked a double to left field to score both runners and bring NU to within 3-2.
A&M cushioned its lead to 4-2 in the next frame, but NU starting pitcher
Nick Berger induced an inning-ending double play that stranded a pair of A&M runners. The Huskies threatened to score in the third inning when
Jason Vosler (0-for-3) and
Connor Lyons (1-for-3) both drew walks, but A&M starting pitcher Daniel Mengden was able to work out of the jam.
Although Mengden's 11-strikeout performance through six innings was domineering, the Huskies managed seven base runners (five hits, two walks) against the A&M ace. The Aggies added five runs on four hits and an error in the fourth inning to claim a 9-2 lead. A run in the seventh inning made it 10-2.
Northeastern lefty
Isaac Lippert was able to quiet the Aggie bats when he threw 4.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one run on three hits and two walks.
A&M third baseman Logan Nottebrock led the A&M offense with three hits (two doubles) and three RBI while Blake Allemand and Troy Stein collected a pair of hits and two RBI, apiece.
"We didn't play as well as we would have liked tonight," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "We made some nervous mistakes, and a team as good as A&M will make you pay. We need to play with more confidence Saturday."
Friday's game marked the first time since 2009 that Northeastern has played a top-25 team. The Huskies lost to No. 25 Ohio State, 11-8, in Winter Haven, Fla., on March 7 of that year.
The Huskies and Aggies return to action Saturday, Feb. 15. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 (ET) as Northeastern southpaw
James Mulry will take the hill against A&M's Parker Ray.
