Northeastern comes up with a strong showing against Red Sox

Interview with head coach Neil McPhee

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jimmy Hand belted a two-run double and the Northeastern pitching staff held the defending World Series Champions to just one run through five innings, but the Boston Red Sox rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to come away with a 5-2 win in seven innings at JetBlue Park Thursday afternoon.

The Huskies (1-5) entered the sixth inning trailing, 1-0, when Shane Allen (1-for-1, R) reached base with an infield hit to the shortstop. Nick Fanneron (1-for-1, R) followed with a single to the right side to set up Hand's (1-for-1, 2B, 2 RBI) two-run double down the leftfield line.

Freshman starting pitcher Dustin Hunt and sophomore southpaw James Mulry kept the Red Sox bats silent for the majority of the game. Hunt faced 10 batters through two scoreless innings, and Mulry wowed the crowd when he struck out the first two batters of the third inning – Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz.

The Huskies threatened to score in the fourth inning when both Sean Lyons (1-for-1, BB) and Justin Kessler (0-for-1, BB) drew walks, but R.J. Roman (0-for-2) struck out to keep the game in a scoreless tie.

A double-steal by the Red Sox and a two-run error highlighted Boston's home half of the sixth inning to secure the win in the 11th annual exhibition game against NU. Thursday marked the second consecutive three-run win for the Red Sox over Northeastern as Boston topped the Huskies, 3-0, in 2013.

The Huskies travel a short distance to Port Charlotte, Fla., to begin the Snowbird Baseball Classic against Central Michigan on Saturday, March 1, at 2:30 p.m.
