Coach Glavine Interview
BOSTON – Sophomore
James Mulry allowed just one hit through seven innings and senior
Connor Lyons gathered three hits as the Northeastern baseball team defeated crosstown-rival Boston College, 7-0, at Friedman Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.
Mulry (7.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 5 K) matched his career-high mark by working seven innings, and through one stretch of the game he retired 17 consecutive batters.
The Huskies (10-10) claimed a 3-0 lead in the third inning after
Josh Treff (1-for-4, R, 2B) posted NU's first hit when he ripped a double down the leftfield line. Lyons (3-for-5, 2R, RBI, 3B, SB) crushed a triple off the right-field wall to score Treff and give NU a 1-0 lead.
Gabe Levanti (0-for-2, R) was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for
Michael Foster (1-for-4, 2RBI), and the NU second baseman delivered a sac fly to right field to score Lyons and increase the Huskies' lead to 2-0.
Northeastern continued its third-inning rally when it loaded the bases with two outs following walks to both
Jason Vosler (2-for-4, R) and
Sean Lyons (1-for-4, R). Eagles (7-15) starting pitcher Eric Stone was relieved by Eric Stevens, who promptly threw a wild pitch that allowed Levanti to score.
Mike Piscopo (2-for-3, RBI, 2B) drew a walk to reload the bases, but
Joey Scambia (1-for-3, 2RBI) grounded out to end the inning.
The Huskies added three more runs with a slew of singles in the fifth inning. Vosler led off with an infield single to third base and
Nick Fanneron (1-for-4, R) followed with a single to left field.
Sean Lyons loaded the bases by beating out an infield single to first, and Piscopo's single scored Vosler. Scambia singled past the diving BC second baseman to plate both Fanneron and Lyons and put the Huskies ahead, 6-0.
Northeastern scored its final run in the eighth inning when Foster hit an RBI single to centerfield that scored
Connor Lyons, who had singled and reached third following a wild pitch and a throwing error.
Mulry looked shaky early on as he allowed two walks in the first inning, but Tom Bourdon's single to the right side in the second inning was the only hit allowed by the southpaw. His outing ended when he snagged a line drive off the bat of Joe Cronin for the third out of the seventh inning.
Isaac Lippert allowed two hits through two scoreless innings in relief and lowered his team-best ERA to 0.95.
The Huskies begin their CAA schedule when they travel to College of Charleston for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 28, at 6 p.m.
