Box Score BOSTON – The Northeastern baseball team scored three runs in the fourth inning and starting pitcher
Chris Carmain didn't allow an earned run through 6.2 innings as the Huskies topped the College of Charleston, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.
Carmain allowed just four hits and one walk in the winning effort, and he has posted a quality start (minimum six innings pitched with a maximum three earned runs) in each of his seven starts this year. The senior improved his overall record to 4-2 and lowered his ERA to 1.15 on the season.
Brad Burcroff (0-for-5, R, SB) began Northeastern's (11-11, 1-1 CAA) fourth-inning rally by reaching base on an error by the CofC shortstop and proceeded to steal second base. After
Nick Fanneron (1-for-4) flied out,
Joey Scambia (0-for-2) drew a walk and
Sean Lyons (0-for-4, R, RBI) hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Burcroff to score after the Cougars failed to turn a double play.
Mike Piscopo (0-for-2, 2R) earned a free pass to set up
Josh Treff's (2-for-4, 2B, 2RBI) two-run double to put the Huskies up 3-0.
Treff tried to score from second on a single by
Connor Lyons (2-for-4, RBI) but was thrown out at the plate.
The Cougars (17-9, 1-1 CAA) put a run on the board in the fifth inning after Nick Pappas reached base on an error by
Michael Foster (1-for-5) and then scored on a double by Morgan Phillips, but NU made up for that run in the next frame.
Piscopo was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth and got into scoring position by stealing second. A single by
Connor Lyons allowed Piscopo to score and put the Huskies ahead, 4-1. CofC made it a one-run game in the eighth inning when Gunnar Heidt scored on a wild pitch and Carl Wise scored on an error, but Foster closed the door on the Cougars by throwing a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
"We really had to grind for that win today," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "Once again, we received outstanding pitching and had timely hitting. We also made a couple of big defensive plays and created some runs with our feet. I'm sure tomorrow will be another tough game for both teams."
The Huskies and Cougars conclude their weekend series on Sunday, March 30, at 1 p.m. Freshman Dustin hunt will get the start on the mound for Northeastern.
