Huskies win rubber match at College of Charleston, 5-3

BOSTON – The Northeastern baseball team scored four runs in the seventh inning and Dustin Hunt recorded his third win of the season as the Huskies topped the College of Charleston, 5-3, Sunday afternoon.
 
NU (12-11, 2-1 CAA) won two of three games at CofC during the weekend and eclipsed the .500 mark for the first time this season.
 
The Huskies trailed 2-1 entering the seventh inning, but Connor Lyons (1-for-4, 2R), Jason Vosler (0-for-3, R) and Michael Foster (1-for-3, R, RBI) each drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Nick Fanneron (2-for-5, R, SB, 2RBI) stepped to the plate and ripped a two-run single to give Northeastern its first lead of the game. The Cougars then drew the infield in, but Sean Lyons (2-for-5, SB, RBI) smacked a single up the middle to score Foster and move Fanneron to third.
 
During the next at bat, Lyons took off for second and appeared to be picked off, but the senior evaded a couple of tags and slid safely into second as Fanneron scampered home to increase Northeastern's lead to 5-2.
 
The Cougars (17-10, 1-2 CAA) made a comeback bid in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with one out. Hunt was lifted for James Mulry, and the southpaw reliever allowed just one run to score when he induced a ground out and ended the frame with a strikeout.
 
Hunt tossed 7.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits, two walks and struck out seven.  

"This was a great team victory today with lots of guys chipping in," said Northeastern assistant coach Mike Glavine. "Our pitching was outstanding again, and guys came through with some big hits with runners in scoring position. It's always a big accomplishment to win a conference series on the road. This was a great way to start our CAA schedule."
 
Brandon Murray gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first inning that carried with strong winds out to right field. The Huskies looked to answer back in the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out after Fanneron, Sean Lyons and Pat Madigan hit consecutive singles, but CofC starting pitcher Nathan Helvey got both Mike Piscopo and Josh Treff to strikeout.
 
Northeastern got on the board thanks to Foster's RBI single the fifth inning. Connor Lyons began the frame by reaching on an infield hit and Brad Burcroff followed by bunting for a hit. Vosler reached on a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners with one out, and Foster drove a run-scoring single to right field.
 
The Cougars reclaimed the lead in bottom of the fifth and looked for more, but Hunt allowed just one run after CofC loaded the bases with one out. Morgan Phillips and Nick Papas hit consecutive one-out singles and Ryan Welke was hit by a pitch. Blake Butler hit into a fielder's choice to score Phillips and give the Cougars a 2-1 edge, but the damage ended there as Hunt struck out Murray for the third out.

Northeastern returns to the diamond when it travels to Rhode Island on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

• Northeastern starting pitchers allowed only three earned runs in 19 innings (1.42 ERA) during the weekend series.
• Dustin Hunt threw a career-high 7.1 innings.
• Nick Fanneron posted the first multi-RBI game of his career and the second multi-hit game of his career.
