Berger throws gem, but Huskies lose in 10 innings, 2-1

Box Score  | Coach McPhee Interview

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Northeastern starting pitcher Nick Berger allowed just one run on three hits through eight innings, but Western Michigan outlasted the Huskies and walked off with a 2-1 win after 10 innings Friday afternoon.

The Broncos (5-7), playing as the designated home team, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Brandon Cable led off with a walk and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Andrew Sohn.

The Huskies (4-7) tied the game in the fifth inning when Josh Treff (1-for-4, R) singled to left field and Connor Lyons (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) drove an RBI double to right field. NU threatened to add more runs in the frame when Brad Burcroff (1-for-3, 2B, 2BB) drew a walk and a wild pitch allowed him and Lyons to advance, but Jason Vosler (1-for-4) struck out to end the threat.

Berger (8.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 SO)  ran into a little trouble in the seventh inning when Brett Sunde led off with a single and Steve Buglione walked, but the junior RHP induced a couple of groundouts and got a fly out to keep the game even, 1-1.

Burcroff began the top of the eighth inning with a double to right field, but a fly out followed by a double play ended the Huskies' half of the inning. Berger continued his best performance of the young season by working a perfect eighth inning and the teams remained tied, 1-1, heading into the ninth.

Sean Lyons (1-for-2, BB) was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth and Shane Allen (1-for-2) followed with a single up the middle, but the Huskies couldn't grab that elusive second run as Treff and Connor Lyons both grounded out.

Burcroff moved from first base to the mound and worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning to send the Huskies into extra innings for the third time this year and the second time in the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

Buglione began the bottom of the 10th inning with a bunt single and moved into scoring position on Cable's sac bunt. Burcroff struck out the next batter, but Grant Miller singled to left-center field to score Buglione and give the Broncos the walk-off win.

Northeastern concludes its Snowbird Baseball Classic schedule when it plays Presbyterian at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 8. The Huskies topped the Blue Hose, 12-11, this past Wednesday.
