Isaac Lippert carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and improved his team-leading ERA to 0.69 as the Northeastern baseball team routed Rhode Island Tuesday afternoon, 6-0.
Making his first start of the season, Lippert allowed two hits, one walk, and totaled six strikeouts. Ryan Olmo posted the Rams' (4-18) first hit of the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh.
The Huskies (13-11) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after
Connor Lyons (1-for-3, R, SB) led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a ground out by
Gabe Levanti (1-for-4).
Jason Vosler (2-for-5, RBI, 2B) followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to put NU on the board.
Northeastern put the game out of reach with a four-run, two-out rally in the fourth inning.
Michael Foster (1-for-4, 2R, SB) reached base after hitting into a fielder's choice and then moved into scoring position on a ground out by
Nick Fanneron (0-for-3).
Pat Madigan (0-for-3, R) and
Mike Piscopo (1-for-3, R) drew consecutive walks to load the bases, and a balk allowed Foster to score the Huskies' second run.
Jimmy Hand (1-for-4, R, 2RBI, 3B) followed with a two-run triple to right-center field, and Josh Teff's (1-for-4, RBI) single allowed Hand to score and give NU a 5-0 lead.
Foster accounted for the Huskies' sixth run when he singled during the eighth inning, stole second, and eventually scored on an error.
Aaron Civale tossed two perfect innings in relief and struck out three to close out the Huskies' third shutout of the season. Northeastern's team ERA now stands at 2.95.
"Our pitching continues to do an outstanding job," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "Lippert and Civale were excellent and we got clutch hits from multiple players on offense. We came in with a great attitude today, and it showed in the way we played."
Northeastern returns home to Friedman Diamond on Wednesday, April 2, for a 3:30 p.m. game against Fairfield.
