Genard sets javelin school record at Minuteman Invitational

AMHERST, Mass.—Behind four individual titles and a record-break performance from Nicole Genard, the Northeastern women's track and field squad snagged a third-place team finish at the Minuteman Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The women's squad collected 114.5 points on the day, while cross-town rival Boston College claimed the team title with 157 points and host Massachusetts finished second with 151.66 points.

Camille Gooden kicked things off with a gold finish in the 400-meter dash, crossing at 56.47 for a ticket to the New England Championships. Gooden also competed in the 200-meter dash and took third at 25.03.

Kate Johnstone led five Huskies in the 1500-meter run after claiming second with a mark of 4:34. Reigning CAA Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Year Lucy Young crossed next for NU at 4:34.54.

Chelsea Hudson set a season-best time (1:02.75) and pulled out a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles to earn a spot at New Englands.

In the field, Nicole Genard set a new school record in the javelin after a 44.26-meter throw earned the sophomore a spot at the ECAC Championships. With that mark, Genard now sits among the top-48 student-athletes of the NCAA East region and leads CAA in the event. Julia Westover also claimed gold in the hammer throw (46.75 meters), while Alexandra rose finished second in the event (45.44 meters).

"We have had a good start to our outdoor season," said head coach Cathrine Erickson. "The balance of events from our men's and women's teams will allow us great versatility as we head into the championship portion of our season."

The Huskies return to action on April 19 when they send student-athletes to the Yale Mark Young Invitational in New Haven, Conn., before NU splits its squad between the Penn Relays and Brown Invite the following weekend.

NU will then kick off post-season competition when it heads to Richmond, Va., on Friday, May 2, for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships.

Box score and final results will be available shortly.
