Huskies drop 10-inning contest against William & Mary, 5-3

Box Score  | Coach Glavine Interview

BOSTON – The Northeastern baseball team held the nation's highest scoring offense scoreless through five innings, but the Huskies fell to William & Mary, 5-3, in 10 innings Friday afternoon.

Northeastern (15-19, 4-6 CAA) starting pitcher Nick Berger tossed five shutout innings before surrendering three runs in the sixth inning. Berger tossed six innings in all and struck out eight while coming away with a no decision.

The Tribe (23-14, 7-2) entered the weekend series at Northeastern leading the nation in runs (333) and ranking third in batting average (.330).

The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after five consecutive batters reached base. Jason Vosler (2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) led off with a single up the middle and Gabe Levanti (1-for-4, R) doubled down the right-field line to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Nick Fanneron's (1-for-4, 2 RBI) single up the middle scored both Vosler and Levanti to give NU a two-run edge, and the Huskies threatened for more in the frame.

Josh Treff (0-for-2) drew a walk and Shane Allen (1-for-4) hit a single to centerfield to load the bases still with no outs on the board, but Tribe starting pitcher Jason Inghram tallied three-straight outs to keep W&M's deficit at two runs.

Northeastern increased its lead to 3-0 after Michael Foster (1-for-4, R) led off the third inning with a single through the right side and Vosler drove him home with a double off the right-field wall.

The Tribe evened the score with a three-run sixth inning after loading the bases without collecting a hit. Berger walked Kevin Nutter and Michael Katz and then hit Ryan Lindemuth to put runners on each base. Ryan Hissey grounded out to first to score Nutter, and Devin White followed with a pinch-hit double that cleared the bases and tied the game, 3-3.

Inghram settled into a groove after he hit Josh Treff to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. From that point on, the W&M southpaw retired 18 consecutive Huskies before getting relieved by Joseph Gaouette in the 10th inning.

The Tribe scored the go-ahead run after White hit a leadoff single in the 10th and scored on Kevin Casey's triple to centerfield. Tim Hoehn added an insurance run with an RBI single that scored Casey.

The Huskies and Tribe continue their weekend series on Saturday, April 19, at 1 p.m. Chris Carmain, who leads the CAA with a 1.19 ERA, will start on the mound for Northeastern.
