Huskies' comeback bid falls short in 3-2 loss to Tribe

Box Score

BOSTON – Chris Carmain tossed seven strong innings without allowing an earned run, but the Northeastern baseball team's comeback bid against William & Mary came up just short in a 3-2 loss Saturday afternoon.

Carmain allowed six hits and three walks to go with seven strikeouts in his ninth-consecutive quality start, but he did not factor in Saturday's decision.

The Tribe (24-14, 7-2 CAA) grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to a couple of hits and an error by the NU defense. Nick Thompson, who drew a one-out walk, appeared to be out at second base on Michael Katz's grounder to short, but Jason Vosler's (1-for-3, 2B) throw to second drew Michael Foster (0-for-4, RBI) off the bag. Ryan Lindemuth flared a double to left field that scored Thompson to give W&M a l-0 advantage. Following a pop out to short, Devin White chopped an infield single that went over Carmain's head and allowed Katz to score, but the Huskies threw Lindemuth out at the plate on the play to end the inning.

Northeastern (15-20-, 4-7 CAA) got on the board in the fifth inning after Cam Hanley (2-for-4, 2 R, 3B) tripled down the right-field line and scored on Josh Treff's (1-for-4, RBI) ground out to second base. Two innings later, the Huskies evened the score with an RBI by Foster. Hanley and Treff began the seventh inning with consecutive singles, and a sac bunt by Connor Lyons (2-for-4) put runners on second and third with one out. Foster grounded out to the shortstop, but the ball was hit deep enough in the hole for Hanley to score the game-tying run.

Brad Burcroff (1-for-4) moved from first base to the mound to relieve Carmain in the eighth inning, and Lindemuth greeted NU's two-way player with a leadoff double. Burcroff struck out the next batter, but White followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out for W&M. Kevin Casey grounded out to short, but Lindemuth was able to score on the play for what stood to be the game-winning run.

The Tribe entered the weekend series at NU as the nation's top scoring team, averaging 9.3 runs per contest. However, Northeastern has limited W&M to just eight runs in two games and improved its CAA-leading team ERA to 2.93.

Northeastern and William & Mary conclude their three-game series on Sunday, April 20, at 12 p.m.
