Northeastern tops Boston College in Beanpot consolation, 4-3

Box Score

BOSTON – The Northeastern baseball team topped crosstown rival Boston College, 4-3, in the Beanpot consolation game Monday afternoon. The Huskies finish the tournament in third place after winning the Beanpot title in 2013.

The hosting Huskies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Connor Lyons (1-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB) led off the first inning with a single to right field and moved into scoring position with his eighth stolen base of the season. Jason Vosler's (1-for-2, R, RBI) single to centerfield score Lyons to give the Huskies a 1-0 edge.

The Eagles (14-26) evened the score in the third inning when they loaded the bases after a pair of walks and a hit batter, and Chris Shaw's single to right field scored Nick Colucci. However, the Huskies countered in the home half of the stanza.

Josh Treff (1-for-3, 2B) led off the bottom of the third inning with a double but was thrown out at third on a ground ball hit by Lyons, who reached base on the fielder's choice. Lyons proceeded to swipe second base as Michael Foster (1-for-2, R, 2B, SB) followed with a walk and Vosler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a pop out by Nick Fanneron (0-for-3), Brad Burcroff (1-for-3, 3B, 3 RBI) cleared the bases by belting a triple to straight-away centerfield. The first baseman was thrown out at home trying to stretch the play into an inside-the-park home run, but NU left the inning with a 4-1 lead.

The Eagles cut Northeastern's advantage to 4-3 after a solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Tom Bourdon cleared the right-field wall on the first offering he saw from Nick Cubarney in the fourth, and John Hennessy hit a two-out solo home run in the sixth.

Mike Fitzgerald allowed just one hit through three scoreless innings to record his first-career save for Northeastern.

The Huskies continue non-conference competition when they travel to Notre Dame for a three-game series starting on Friday, April 25, at 7:05 p.m.
