Box Score BOSTON –
Chris Carmain reeled in another quality start and both
Brad Burcroff and
Connor Lyons picked up a pair of hits in Northeastern's 6-2 win at Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.
Carmain improved to 5-2 on the season and posted his 10th consecutive quality start after yielding just two earned runs on six hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts through seven innings.
The Huskies (17-22) were held hitless through the first three innings, but they collected their first hit when
Michael Foster (1-for-4, 2 R, RBI) led off the fourth inning with a single up the middle. Northeastern capitalized on its first base runner of the game as Foster moved into scoring position on
Nick Fanneron's (1-for-4, 2 RBI) ground out and then scored on
Brad Burcroff's (2-for-4, RBI) single to left field.
NU posted four runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead to 5-0. The Huskies loaded the bases with one out after
Sean Lyons (1-for-4, R) singled,
Josh Treff (0-for-3, R) reached on an error, and
Connor Lyons (2-for-4, R) singled. Foster drew a bases-loaded walk and
Jason Vosler (0-for-4, R, RBI) hit a sac-fly that scored Treff to put the Huskies ahead, 3-0. Both
Connor Lyons and Foster advanced on Vosler's fly ball, and Fanneron drove in both runners with a single to centerfield.
The Huskies threatened for more in the sixth inning when
Sean Lyons reached on a two-base error after laying down a bunt with one out, and Treff drew a walk. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, but
Connor Lyons popped out and Foster struck out to end NU's half of the stanza.
Carmain's only blemish came in the sixth inning when the Fighting Irish (17-25) put a pair of runs on the board after Ricky Sanchez hit a one-out single up the middle and came around to score on Kyle Fiala's two-out double. Fiala scored on Cavon Biggio's single, but Biggio was thrown out trying to take second base on the play after the initial throw home.
Northeastern got a run back after Vosler led off the sixth inning with a single and moved into scoring position on Fanneron's sac bunt.
Cam Hanley's (1-for-4, RBI) single to right field allowed Vosler to score and increase NU's lead to 6-2.
"We played a great style of baseball today," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "We showed what we are capable of when we play as a team."
Aaron Civale shut the door on Notre Dame by throwing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The three-game weekend series between Northeastern and Notre Dame concludes on Sunday, April 27, at 2:05 p.m. (EDT).
