Josh Treff tied a career-best two RBI, while starting pitcher
Dustin Hunt and
Mike Fitzgerald provided a combined shutout to lead the Northeastern baseball team to a series-clinching 4-0 victory against Notre Dame at U.S. Steel Yard Sunday afternoon.
Hunt (4-0) recorded the win with seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Fitzgerald relieved Hunt in the top of the eighth and allowed just one hit through two perfect innings.
Treff recorded two hits, while Conor Lyons went 3-for-5 with a run in the fourth inning. The win marks the Huskies third shutout game of the year, and the first since April 1 against Rhode Island.
Notre Dame's Pat Connaughton walked three batters in the top of the 4th before walking in a run to put Northeastern on the board first. Treff followed up with a single down the right-field line, crossing Lyons and
Cam Hanley to give NU a 3-0 advantage. Northeastern loaded the bases once again, but Connaughton worked his way out of the jam to prevent another NU run.
The Irish made some noise in the sixth inning with an attempt to score off a sac fly, but a spectacular throw to the plate from left-fielder
Shane Allen kept ND off the board.
Northeastern added an insurance run in the seventh as Foster crossed Lyons with a sac-fly to push the Huskies ahead, 4-0.
Connaughton (1-4) recorded the loss for the Irish after allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and just as many strikeouts through 6.2 innings.
The Huskies return to action with two mid-week matchups against Hartford and Bryant. NU will host the Hawks on Tuesday, April 29, before traveling to Smithfield, R.I., on Wednesday to face the Bulldogs.
