Box Score BOSTON – A seven-run third inning by Delaware overwhelmed the Northeastern baseball team as the Blue Hens claimed a 12-2 win Saturday afternoon.
Delaware's 12 runs are the most surrendered by Northeastern since the Huskies lost to William & Mary in the 2013 CAA Tournament, 12-4.
Connor Lyons led the Huskies offensively by hitting 3-for-3 with a run and posted his seventh steal of the season.
NU (13-14, 2-3 CAA) starting pitcher
James Mulry faced just six batters through the first two innings, but the Blue Hens (13-14, 2-2 CAA) tagged him for seven runs in the third. Mulry got the first batter out a grounder to short, but three singles accompanied by an error allowed Delaware to take a 3-0 lead. The Huskies looked like they were going to escape further damage when Mulry tallied a strikeout for the inning's second out, but the Blue Hens posted four consecutive RBI base hits to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Mulry was charged with just one earned run through three innings.
Delaware added two unearned runs in the sixth stanza to go up 9-0.
The Huskies put two men on base in the seventh inning after
Gabe Levanti (0-for-2) was hit by a pitch and
Nick Fanneron (1-for-3) singled, but a strikeout by
Shane Allen (0-for-3) followed by
Mike Piscopo's (0-for-2) line out to center left the runners stranded.
A three-run seventh inning, highlighted by Ty Warrington's two-run double, put Delaware ahead, 12-0.
Northeastern posted two runs in the eighth inning after it loaded the bases when
Josh Treff (1-for-3, R) and Lyons hit consecutive singles and
Michael Foster (0-for-3) drew a walk.
Jason Vosler (0-for-3, RBI) hit an RBI groundout and a wild pitch during the next at-bat allowed the Huskies to put two runs on the board.
"We were outplayed today in all phases of the game," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "All we can do is put it behind us and compete harder tomorrow."
Northeastern and Delaware conclude their weekend series on Sunday, April 6, at 1 p.m.
