Northeastern comes up short against Connecticut, 2-0

Box Score  | Coach Glavine Interview

BOSTON – The Northeastern baseball team was held to three hits as the visiting Huskies from Connecticut topped NU, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon.

Northeastern had several chances to put a run on the board, starting with Connor Lyons' (1-for-4, 2B) leadoff double in the first inning, but an infield lineout and a pair of groundouts ended the bottom of the frame.

The home Huskies trailed 2-0 when they loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh inning. Jason Vosler (0-for-3) and Nick Fanneron  (0-for-2) drew consecutive walks and Brad Burcroff (1-for-4) followed with a bunt single down the third-base line. However, UConn reliever Patrick Ruotolo tallied two strikeouts and induced a groundout to end the NU threat.

The visiting Huskies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Bryan Daniello and Blake Davey drew back-to-back walks with one out. Bobby Mulley followed with a double to left-center field to score Daniello.

UConn collected an insurance run in the fourth inning after Jack Sundberg reached base on a walk and stole second. Aaron Hill's RBI single up the middle gave UConn its 2-0 lead.

Northeastern's Nick Cubarney tossed four innings and allowed two earned runs in his first start of the season. Mike Fitzgerald and Burcroff combined to keep UConn off the board while yielding only four hits through the final five innings.

The Huskies begin to defend their Beanpot title when they travel to Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 9, for a 3 p.m. start in the first round of the tournament.
