Huskies drop Beanpot opener at Massachusetts, 5-3

AMHERST, Mass. – The Northeastern baseball team lost its first-round Beanpot Tournament contest at Massachusetts, 5-3, Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Huskies (13-17) trailed 5-1 entering the seventh inning but they scored a pair of runs in the frame to stay within striking distance. Gabe Levanti (2-for-4, R) began the rally with an infield single to the shortstop and Cam Hanley (1-for-3, R) followed with his collegiate hit, a single to right field. Levanti advanced to third and Hanley took second on the play thanks to a fielding error on the right fielder. Connor Lyons' (1-for-4, RBI, R) single to center plated Levanti, and Michael Foster (2-for-4, RBI) followed with a single to score Hanley and bring NU to within 5-3, but UMass kept Northeastern off the board for the rest of the game.
 
The Huskies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Lyons led off with a walk and advanced to second on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt. Foster followed with a walk, and Jason Vosler's ground out advanced both runners one base. Nick Fanneron (1-for-4, RBI) smacked a single to left field to score Lyons, but Foster was thrown out at the plate after trying to score from second base.
 
The Minutemen (5-19) evened the score in the next frame after Dylan Begin led off with a double and then advanced to third on a ground out. Adam Picard reached base on a fielding error by Vosler, but Begin stayed on third during the play. John Jennings then came through with a sac fly to centerfield, allowing Begin to score.
 
UMass took a 2-1 lead in the third inning after Kyle Adie hit a two-out single and Nick Sanford followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Sanford got caught up in a run down during after a pickoff throw to first base, but he remained on the base paths long enough for Adie to score.
 
UMass posted three runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The Minutemen scored their runs on an error, a fielder's choice, and a sac fly.
 
Northeastern starting pitcher Isaac Lippert made his second start of the season and allowed just two earned runs through five innings. Will Jahn and Aaron Civale came out of the bullpen to combine for three innings without yielding an earned run.
 
The Huskies will play either Boston College or Harvard in the Beanpot consolation game on April 21 at Northeastern.
 
Northeastern returns home to Friedman Diamond for a three-game series against conference foe Towson beginning Friday, April 11, at 3 p.m.
