Box Score BOSTON –
Chris Carmain threw the first complete game of his collegiate career and Northeastern rallied for five runs in the eighth inning as the Huskies topped James Madison, 8-4, Saturday night.
Â
Carmain allowed four earned runs on seven hits and one walk as his seven strikeouts were one shy of his career-best mark.
Â
Northeastern (22-25, 7-10 CAA) entered the eighth inning trailing 3-1, but
Michael Foster (0-for-4, R) led off the frame with a walk and
Jason Vosler's (3-for-5, 2 R) single put runners on the corners with nobody out. Following a strikeout,
Gabe Levanti (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) chopped an infield single up the middle to score Foster to cut the deficit to 3-2, and
Shane Allen (1-for-2, R) followed with a single to load the bases with one out.
Sean Lyons (1-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI) drew a four-pitch walk to score Vosler and even the score, 3-3, and the Huskies weren't done there.
Â
Keith Kelly (0-for-1, RBI) came in to pinch hit and earned a five-pitch walk with the bases loaded, and
Josh Treff (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice to score Allen as the Huskies claimed a 5-3 lead.
Connor Lyons (1-for-5, RBI, 2B) followed with a double to left-center that scored his brother, Sean, to cap off the Huskies' half of the eighth.
Â
"We competed very hard tonight," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "We played all 27 outs and got contributions from a bunch of different guys. It was a total team effort tonight."
The Dukes (16-30, 7-9 CAA) took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning after Kevin Husum and Ty McFarland hit consecutive one-out singles to put runners on the corners. Matt Tenaglia's ground out to Carmain allowed McFarland to move into scoring position, and Conner Brown's single to centerfield scored both runners to give the Dukes a two-run advantage.
Â
The Huskies got on the board in the seventh inning after Levanti led off with a single and came all the way around to score on
Sean Lyons' double to right-center field, cutting JMU's lead to 2-1. Lyons was thrown at third as
Mike Piscopo (0-for-3) reached on a fielder's choice, but Treff followed with a double to left-center to put two runners in scoring position with two outs. However,
Connor Lyons grounded out to second to end the top of the seventh.
Â
The Dukes got the run back in the bottom of the seventh after Josh Wyatt hit a one-out double and Tyler Carroll followed with an RBI double to left field to give JMU a 3-1 lead, but the Huskies stormed back in the next half inning to claim a 6-3 edge.
Â
Northeastern pushed its lead to 8-3 in the ninth inning after Vosler led off with a single and
Brad Burcroff (2-for-5, R, 2B, SB) followed with a double. Next up, Levanti hit a sac fly to right field that allowed Vosler to tag up and score as Burcroff advanced to third on the play. Burcroff scored NU's eighth run after
Sean Lyons reached base on a fielding error by the JMU shortstop.
Â
Wyatt's solo home run in the ninth accounted for the Dukes' fourth run.
Â
Northeastern and JMU conclude their three-game series on Sunday, May 11, at 1 p.m.
