Coach Glavine InterviewBOSTON –
Michael Foster tied a career-high four hits and
James Mulry struck out seven through five innings as the Northeastern baseball team beat UMass Lowell on Tuesday afternoon, 7-3.
Â
Foster (4-for-5, R, 2 2B, RBI, 2 SB) totaled four hits, including two doubles, for the second time this season as the Pickering, Ontario, native added his 15th and 16th stolen bases in the winning effort. Mulry improved to 2-3 on the season and came up one strikeout shy of his career-best total.
Â
The Huskies (24-25) claimed a 2-0 edge in the second inning after
Gabe Levanti (1-for-2, R) reached base by getting hit by a pitch with two outs, and
Keith Kelly (3-for-3, R, 2B, RBI) ripped a double down the right-field line to put two runners in scoring position.
Josh Treff (0-for-1) struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but he reached base on the wild pitch as both Levanti and Kelly scored on the play.
Â
Northeastern pushed its lead to 6-0 in the third inning after Foster led off with a double to deep right-center field, and
Jason Vosler (1-for-5, R, 2B, RBI) followed with an RBI double to center. NU loaded the bases after
Brad Burcroff (0-for-4, R) drew a walk and
Cam Hanley (1-for-4, R) was hit by a pitch.
Sean Lyons' (0-for-3, RBI) sac fly to right field allowed Vosler to score, and Levanti hit an infield single to loaded the bases again for Northeastern. Kelly smacked an RBI single to right field to give the Huskies a 5-0 advantage, and
Connor Lyons (2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI) capped off the inning's scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Â
Â
The River Hawks (19-21) posted two unearned runs in the fifth inning after Mulry began the frame with a pair of strikeouts. Kelly Rooney got on base via a walk and Luke Reynolds reached base on an error by NU third baseman Hanley that put two runners in scoring position. Ian Strom followed with a single that scored both runners. UMass Lowell added one more run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Jack Trotman that scored Matthew Sanchez, but that was the only run allowed by the NU bullpen as
Will Jahn, Burcroff and Foster combined to yield just three hits through four innings.
Â
Northeastern got the run back after
Connor Lyons led off the eighth inning with a double to right field and Foster followed with a double to left field that pushed NU's lead to 7-3.
Â
The Huskies conclude their regular season schedule by hosting fellow CAA member UNCW for three games starting on Thursday, May 15, at 3 p.m. Northeastern needs just one win to qualify for the conference tournament.
