Nick Berger pitched the third complete game of his collegiate career and tied a career-best 11 strikeouts, but the Northeastern baseball team fell to UNCW on Thursday afternoon, 3-1.
Berger's record dropped to 2-6 despite allowing just six hits and a walk through nine innings. He struck out 11 earlier this year against Niagara.
The Huskies (24-26, 8-11 CAA) grabbed a 1-0 lead after
Brad Burcroff (2-for-4, R, 2B) led off the second inning with a double off the left-field wall, and
Gabe Levanti's (0-for-3) sac bunt allowed Burcroff to move 90 feet from home. The ensuing batter
Sean Lyons (1-for-3, RBI) ripped a single up the middle to give Northeastern an early advantage, but the Seahawks (27-24, 9-8 CAA) stormed back to score all three of their in the fourth inning.
UNCW posted four-consecutive singles to begin the fourth, beginning with base hits by Terence Connelly and Luke Dunlap. Corey Dick followed with a single up the middle to even the score, and Dunlap barely beat the throw to home plate after Ryan LaGrange singled to right field, giving the Seahawks a 2-1 edge. Teddy Cillis' fly out allowed Dick to advance to third, and Robbie Thorburn followed by reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed Dick to score.
The Huskies put a pair of runners on base in the sixth inning after
Jason Vosler (2-for-4) and Burcroff hit consecutive one-out singles, but UNCW starting pitcher Mat Batts induced a pop out and ground out to end the inning. In all, Batts allowed one earned run on seven hits and no walks through seven innings.
The Huskies outhit the Seahawks, 8-6, as Burcroff, Vosler and
Josh Treff (2-for-4) each finished with two hits.
Northeastern needs just one win in its last two games to clinch a CAA Tournament bid. The Huskies turn to
Chris Carmain, who will start on the hill on Friday, May 16, at 3 p.m.
