| Line-upsBOSTON — The Northeastern University women's rowing team stormed to its fourth CAA championship in six years on Sunday morning, sweeping all three races at the conference regatta on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. The conference title earns the Huskies an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship, May 30-June 1, in Indianapolis.
Both the varsity and second varsity crews for Northeastern cruised to victory, each winning by better than six seconds. The Huskies' varsity four engineered an improbable come back, erasing an open-water deficit to win by just under two seconds.
Northeastern finished with 36 points to win the team championship, followed by Buffalo with 30 points. Drexel placed third with 24 points, followed by Delaware (18) and Eastern Michigan (12). The six-point margin in the team race is the second-largest in the regatta's history, behind only the 11-point margin posted by NU in its 2011 championship.
Â
"Today was a total team effort," said Head Coach
Joe Wilhelm, who earned his third CAA Coach of the Year honor in the last four seasons. "These athletes have worked extremely hard and I couldn't be happier for them. We are excited for the opportunity to compete with the best teams in the country at the NCAA championships in two weeks."
Wilhelm's Coach of the Year honor was one of six all-conference awards captured by Northeastern. The Huskies placed four student-athletes on the All-CAA First Team in
Kelsey Flynn,
Chloe Laverack,
Katie O'Connell, and
Alaina Williams. Senior
Lauren Terris was named to the CAA All-Academic team.
The varsity four set the tone for the day, staging a dramatic come-from-behind victory. The Huskies trailed Buffalo by open water before rowing through the Bulls with an impressive performance over the second half of the course to win by just over 1.5 seconds. NU clocked in at 7:30.360, with Buffalo second at 7:31.873. Drexel finished third, followed by Delaware and Eastern Michigan.
The Red and Black cruised to victory in the second varsity eight race. The Huskies led wire-to-wire en route to a nearly-seven-second victory. NU completed the course in 6:45.195, followed by Buffalo at 6:51.871. Drexel finished third, with Delaware in fourth and Eastern Michigan in fifth.
The Northeastern varsity capped the Huskies' sweep with a six-second victory in the day's final race. Similar to the second varsity event, the NU varsity grabbed an immediate lead and never looked back. The Huskies turned in a time of 6:38.037, followed by Buffalo at 6:44.165. Drexel finished third, with Delaware and Eastern Michigan in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Northeastern now advances to the NCAA Championship in Indianapolis, May 30-June 1. The Huskies will be one of 22 programs from across the nation to compete in the national championship regatta.
