Box Score BOSTON –
Michael Foster hit a pair of home runs and
Connor Lyons collected five hits to lead the Northeastern baseball team's offensive onslaught in a 12-5 win at Hofstra on Friday afternoon.
Foster's (3-for-5, 3 R, SB, 2 HR, 5 RBI) multi-home run effort is the first of his collegiate career as the Pickering, Ontario, native added a career-best five RBI. Lyons' (5-for-5, 5 R, 2B, 3 RBI) five hits matched a career-high, and he crossed home plate a career-best five times.
Lyons and Foster, the respective No. 1 and No. 2 hitters in the NU batting order, combined to hit 8-for-10 with eight runs scored and eight driven in.
"The offense did a great job today," said Northeastern assistant coach
Mike Glavine. "We scored in six different innings, and [starting pitcher]
Nick Berger battled hard on the mound. We had great focus today and need to repeat that focus tomorrow."
Foster's first home run of the game and his second of the season put the Huskies on top, 2-0, in the first inning after Lyons led off with a single. Northeastern threatened for more in the opening frame after
Jason Vosler (2-for-3, 2 RBI) drew a walk and
Brad Burcroff (2-for-5, RBI) singled, but Vosler was thrown out trying to advance to third on Burcroff's base hit.
Nick Fanneron (1-for-5, RBI) grounded out and
Cam Hanley (1-for-3, R) popped out to end the top of the first.
The Huskies added two more runs in the second inning after
Sean Lyons (0-for-4, 2 R) reached base on a fielder's choice and got into scoring position with his third stolen base of the season.
Connor Lyons' single to left field scored Sean, as Connor reached second base on the throw to the plate. Following a walk to Foster, Vosler singled to left field, which allowed
Connor Lyons to score and give the Huskies a 4-0 advantage.
The Pride looked to close the gap in the bottom of the second inning after it loaded the bases with one out, but Berger allowed just one run in the stanza when T.J. Ehrsam got Hofstra on the board with a sac fly to right field as
Sean Lyons' great catch prevented more runs from scoring.
The Huskies took a commanding 7-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning.
Josh Treff (1-for-4, R, 2B) led off with a double and then scored when
Connor Lyons followed with a double of his own. Lyons advanced to third base on a single by Foster, and Vosler's sac fly to left field allowed Lyons to tag up and score. Following Foster's swipe of second base, his 13th steal of the season,
Nick Fanneron came through with an RBI single to give the Huskies their seventh run.
Foster's third home run of the season and second of the game, a three-run shot, gave Northeastern a 10-1 lead in the fifth inning.
Hofstra posted three runs in the seventh inning with a two-run home run by Kenny Jackson and an RBI single by Brian MacDonald, but Northeastern reliever
Mike Fitzgerald sealed the win for the Huskies after allowing just two hits through 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
The Huskies and Pride continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday, May 3, at 12 p.m.
