CAA Interview with Coach McPhee and Nick BergerWILMINGTON, North Carolina –
Nick Berger pitched his second-consecutive complete game as the Northeastern baseball team stayed alive in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament by defeating James Madison, 3-1, in an elimination game on Wednesday night.
Â
Berger allowed just one earned run on four hits and no walks while striking out 10, and his spectacular performance comes less than one week after he struck out 11 during a complete-game win against UNCW.
Â
Berger opened the game by retiring seven-consecutive Dukes (17-36) before both Bobby San Martin and Josh Wyatt hit singles in the third inning, but the Commack, New York, native got out of the frame unscathed thanks to a pair of strikeouts.
Â
The Huskies (26-28) posted all three of their runs in the fifth inning after
Gabe Levanti (2-for-3, R) led off with a single and
Sean Lyons (0-for-2, R, SB) reached base on an error after laying down a sac bunt. Lyons proceeded to steal second, and his brother,
Connor Lyons (1-for-4, R, 2 RBI,), hit a two-run single to left field.
Connor Lyons moved to second base on the throw home during the play, and
Michael Foster (2-for-4, RBI, SB) scored Lyons with a single that gave NU a 3-0 edge.
Â
Berger retired 13-consecutive batters before Tyler Gregory led off the eighth inning with a single and then moved to second base on a wild pitch, but Berger recorded three consecutive outs, including his eighth strikeout, to end JMU's half of the frame.
Â
JMU scored its lone run in the ninth inning thanks to Matt Tenaglia's RBI single that scored Josh Wyatt. Berger ended the game with his 10th strikeout, one shy of his career-best mark.
Â
Northeastern's next postseason game is on Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m. The Huskies' opponent will be not be determined until the middle of the day. Â
