Hanley homers, but Huskies lose at James Madison, 3-2

Box Score

BOSTON – Cam Hanley hit the first home run of his collegiate career, but the Northeastern baseball team surrendered a 2-0 lead in its 3-2 loss at James Madison on Friday night.

Hanley (1-for-4, R, HR, RBI) belted the first pitch he saw in the second inning over the right-field wall to give NU (21-25, 6-10 CAA) a 1-0 lead. Brad Burcroff (1-for-4, RBI) added to the Huskies' lead in the third inning with a two-out RBI single on a 2-2 pitch that scored Connor Lyons (0-for-3, R). Lyons led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and he moved into scoring position on Michael Foster's (1-for-4) single to centerfield.

The Dukes (16-29, 7-8 CAA) got on the board in the home half of the third inning after Kevin Husum reached on an infield single and Ty McFarland followed with a single to right field, but Sean Lyons (1-for-2, SB) showed off his arm and threw out Husum at third base as McFarland took second on the throw. Conner Brown and Matt Tenaglia followed with consecutive walks to load the bases for JMU, and Kyle Weston hit into a fielder's choice that allowed McFarland to score and cut NU's lead to 2-1.

The Huskies threatened to add to its lead in the fourth inning after Pat Madigan (1-for-4) and Josh Treff (2-for-4) hit consecutive two-out singles, but Madigan was caught stealing after he tried to take third on a pitch in the dirt.

The Dukes pieced together a two-out really in the home half of the fourth when Josh Wyatt reached on an infield hit to second base and moved into scoring position when Foster's throw to first sailed wide. Following a walk to Husum, McFarland singled through the left side to plate Wyatt and even the score. JMU claimed a 3-2 edge in the fifth inning after Weston singled and Tyler Gregory doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Weston took off for home on contact when Bobby San Martin grounded out to third base, and the Dukes claimed a one-run lead.

Northeastern loaded the bases in the seventh inning after Treff singled and Foster and Jason Vosler (0-for-4) drew back-to-back walks, but Burcroff popped out and Hanley grounded out to end the scoring chance. The Huskies put a runner in scoring position in the eighth inning after Sean Lyons drew a walk and stole second with two outs, but Treff struck out to end the top of the eighth.

Northeastern starting pitcher Nick Berger took the tough-luck loss after allowing only two earned runs through 6.2 innings to go with six strikeouts.

"This is the time of year we need to play our best baseball, and we didn't do that tonight," said Northeastern assistant coach Mike Glavine. "We made a bunch of mistakes offensively, and it cost us. We have to learn from this and be ready for Saturday."

The Huskies and Dukes continue their three-game series on Saturday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m.
