Highlights
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Northeastern men's ice hockey team (8-11-3, 4-7-2) received 23 saves from
Derick Roy and production from all 18 skaters en route to a 4-1 victory at No. 10/9 Vermont on Friday night.
Â
Kevin Roy and
Torin Snydeman both recorded a goal and an assist, while
Trevor Owens contributed two helpers. Mike Paliotta scored the lone goal for UVM, which received 20 saves from Mike Santaguida and outshot NU 24-22. Northeastern went 0-of-2 on the power play while Vermont was 1-of-5.
Â
After a rocky opening few minutes of the first period, both teams found their way as the frame wore on with each squad scoring once, while the Huskies held a slight 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Huskies drew first blood less than three minutes into the game when
Kevin Roy flew down the left side of the ice before firing a dart on goal that beat Santaguida over the glove for Roy's ninth goal of the season.
Â
The Catamounts would strike back, however, with 5:13 to play in the period with a power play marker from Mike Paliotta. With NU in the box for charging, Paliotta took a feed from Alexx Privatera and blasted a low one-timer that got inside the left post for Paliotta's sixth goal of the year.
Â
Both netminders were tested through the second period with Vermont outshooting NU 12-7, and the Huskies were forced to kill off four penalties during the middle stanza. Northeastern, however, potted the period's lone goal to take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room. Snydeman had an opportunity to put NU ahead early in the frame when he dug in on the doorstep and fired a one-timer off a pass from
Mike Szmatula below the goal line, but Santaguida was there to make the stop.
Â
Roy came up huge for the Huskies during UVM's four power play opportunities, making six stops while NU was shorthanded, including several post-to-post saves when the Catamounts were looking to connect at the backdoor. The Huskies caught a break midway through the period when chaos ensued in front of the NU net before the official lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle as UVM crashed the cage.
Â
With NU at full strength, Northeastern had a couple bids to take the lead, including one from
Dalen Hedges in the slot, but Santaguida robbed the Husky sophomore with a glove save from point blank range.
Â
The Huskies kept coming, however, and took a 2-1 lead with 7:43 left in the period when Szmatula sent the puck up to Snydeman entering the UVM zone. Snydeman then sped towards goal before roofing a shot over Santaguida's left shoulder for Snydeman's fifth of the season.
Â
The Huskies kept the pressure on the Catamounts into the third period, adding another two goals. McMurtry put Northreastern up by two about five minutes into the period when he received a feed from Hedges before taking the puck to the net hard to beat Santaguida five-hole.
Â
Szmatula would give the Huskies a three-goal cushion midway through the frame when he buried a rebound off a shot from
Jake Schechter at the point.
Â
Roy and the NU defense would take it from there as the Husky goaltender made six third period saves to ice the game for Northeastern.
Â
The teams will meet again tomorrow night in the series finale at Gutterson Fieldhouse in a non-conference matchup. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
