Huskies fall to Seahawks in five

BOSTON – The Northeastern women's volleyball pushed UNCW to another five-set battle on Sunday afternoon at Cabot Center. NU claimed the first and third set, but the Seahawks slid by NU with just two points in the fifth to claim the match.
 
The set scores were 25-15, 16-25, 25-21, 20-25 and 13-15. The Huskies move to 4-21 overall (1-9 CAA) and the Seahawks improve to 17-5 overall (8-2 CAA).
 
The match was highlighted by first-year Laynie Whitehead earning her 100th career kill and captain Jamie Bredahl registering her second triple-double of 2015 with 30 assists, 14 digs and 11 kills. The junior is currently ranked No. 9 in the country for TD's and first in the CAA.
 
Brigitte Burcescu recorded a team-high of 14 kills and added four blocks, while Cherylain Dizon entered 12 kills of her own. Gabrielle Eyl owned the defense with a match-high of 25 digs, while Caterina Rosander assisted the defense with five blocks.
 
UNCW's Kristen Powell paced the Seahawks with 14 kills, upheld by Alyssa Desjardins' 35 assists. Defensively, UNCW had Lindsay Hartmann dig up 18 of NU's attacks, while Meredith Peacock blocked five.
 
Set one recap: (25-15, Northeastern)
• Whitehead got her 100th career kill to give NU an 8-5 lead.
• The Huskies' took a 5-1 run to lead 15-8.
• NU's largest lead was at 20-10, and a bomb from Burcescu made it 21-12.
• The Huskies wrapped up the set with a Dizon kill deep left corner. 

Set two recap: (25-16, UNCW)
• UNCW's early control brought them up 11-6.
• Rosander registered a kill at 16-10 to stop the Seahawks' momentum.
• The Seahawks answer back with two straight points to lead 18-10.
• Two errors by UNCW helped NU at 23-16, but the Seahawks adjusted to move the match to four sets. 

Set three recap: (25-21, Northeastern)
• UNCW answered a 2-0 NU start with five straight to build an early lead.
• The Huskies tabbed a 7-1 run to get back in the game at 10-all.
• Rosander posted a block to tie the set again at 17.
• Dizon earned the last three NU points, all on ferocious kills, for the Huskies to take the stanza.

Set four recap: (25-20, UNCW)
• The Huskies gathered a 6-2 lead after blocks from Burcescu, Reiter and Rosander.
• UNCW clawed back using blocks to earn a three-point cushion at 15-12.
• NU struck with three straight, which featured a Wang ace, to hold UNCW at set point, but the Seahawks closed out with a kill. 

Set five recap: (15-13, UNCW)
• NU led early on with a Bredahl ace and two Reiter kills, but UNCW answered back to get ahead, 7-5.
• The Huskies returned with a Dizon kill to minimize the gap, 9-8.
• NU countered with five straight points to hold back UNCW, 13-all.
• The run featured two kills by Bredahl and back-to-back kills from Dizon.
• UNCW's back-to-back swings resulted in kills and the Seahawks took the match.

The Huskies continue their second round of CAA play with Hofstra next Sunday, Nov. 1, in Hempstead, New York for a 1 p.m. match.
