BALTIMORE – Northeastern women's basketball forward
Samantha DeFreese has been named to the 2015-16 Preseason All-CAA Second Team, as announced by the conference Tuesday during CAA Basketball Media Day.
DeFreese is one of three players in the league this year to have garnered a preseason all-conference nod a season removed from receiving a selection to the All-CAA Third Team (Marlena Tremba, Jazmon Gwathmey). The Bergenfield, New Jersey, native joins Tremba, a William & Mary guard, on the 2015-16 Preseason All-CAA Second Team, while Gwathmey, a James Madison guard, was named to the Preseason All-CAA First Team.
A seasoned veteran on Huntington Avenue, DeFreese led Northeastern in scoring (13.9 points per game) and rebounding (7.0 rebounds per game) during the 2014-15 season, dropping a team best, 261 points (14.5 points per game), during conference play. Last year, the then-junior eclipsed double digits in scoring during 22 of the 29 games she played in and notched seven double-doubles, including three straight against William & Mary (Feb. 1), Delaware (Feb. 5), and Towson (Feb. 8).
Delaware's Erika Brown, Elon's Shay Burnett, and Drexel's Rachel Pearson rounded out the 2015-16 Preseason All-CAA Second Team. College of Charleston's Bre Bolden, Drexel's Sarah Curran, Hofstra's Ashunae Durant, James Madison's Angela Mickens and Gwathmey received the nod as the league's Preseason All-CAA First Team.
Northeastern was predicted to finish tenth in the final 2015-16 CAA standings, as also announced during CAA Basketball Media Day. Two-time defending conference champion James Madison was picked to defend its title yet again by the league's coaches, appearing ahead of second-place Drexel and third-place Hofstra in the predicted order of finish.
Elon was voted to finish fourth in the league this year, followed by Delaware in fifth, William & Mary in sixth, UNCW in seventh, Towson in eighth, and College of Charleston in ninth.
In addition to the preseason all-conference teams and predicted order of finish, the CAA also announced its 2015-16 TV schedule. The American Sports Network will be televising the Huskies' home game in Matthews Arena against Michigan State on Dec. 18 at 8 p.m.
Northeastern will open its 2015-16 schedule on Friday, Nov. 13, with a 12 p.m. road game against its crosstown rival, Boston University. The Huskies will close out opening weekend with a 2 p.m. game at Siena on Sunday, Nov. 15, before making their home debut at Cabot Center against UMES on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. Northeastern will begin its CAA schedule on Jan. 3 at home against Towson.
