InfographicSOUTH BEND, Ind. – Despite 28 saves from freshman goaltender
Ryan Ruck and two goals in a span of 28 seconds in the second period, the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (1-8-1, 0-4-1) was unable to overcome a 3-0 deficit, dropping a 3-2 decision at No. 18 Notre Dame on Thursday night at Compton Family Ice Arena.
The Huskies received goals from
Zach Aston-Reese and
Brendan Collier, their first tallies of the season, while Jordan Gross led the Fighting Irish with a pair of first period tallies. Cal Petersen had 23 saves in net for the hosts, who were 1-of-3 on the man advantage while holding NU to an 0-of-4 showing on the power play.
Notre Dame bolted out to a 2-0 first period lead with goals coming seven minutes apart, both from Gross. UND would add a third from Andrew Oglevie three minutes into the second period before the Huskies clawed back to two goals in less than a minute to cut the Fighting Irish lead to one. NU would continue to search for the tying goal throughout the third period, tossing nine shots on Petersen, but could not net the equalizer.
Goal descriptions:• Notre Dame jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the game when the Fighting Irish capitalized on a too many men on the ice penalty on the Huskies. After NU kept Notre Dame at bay for the first 90 seconds of the penalty, Gross cashed in with a soft shot through traffic that beat Ruck glove side for his fourth of the season.
• Gross added to Notre Dame's lead with 6:42 to go in the first period, crashing the net to bang home his own rebound that was sitting in the crease following an initial shot from between the hash marks.
• The Fighting Irish made it a 3-0 game three minutes into the second period as Andrew Oglevie buried his first goal of the season, ripping a one-timer from the slot over the right shoulder of Ruck off a feed from Jake Evans in the corner.
• Northeastern began to cut into the deficit less than seven minutes into the period when
Zach Aston-Reese netted his first of the year, cleaning up the mess in front of Petersen. After the line of
Nolan Stevens,
John Stevens and Aston-Reese maintained zone time in the attacking end, the Huskies broke through as Aston-Reese buried a rebound off a shot from
John Stevens to make it a two-goal game.
• Collier brought Northeastern within one just 28 seconds after the Aston-Reese tally when he recorded his first of the year, finishing off a play from
Dalen Hedges and
Ryan Rosenthal to make it a 3-2 game.
Stats of the game:• Northeastern is now 8-4-1 all-time against Notre Dame, and 4-2-0 at Compton Family Ice Arena
• Hedges has an assist in three of his last four games.
The road ahead• The Huskies and Fighting Irish will square off again tomorrow in the series finale. Puck drop is slated for 7:35 p.m. from the Compton Family Ice Arena.
