Ten 3-pointers not enough for NU against Canisius

BOSTON – Three-point shooting reigned supreme during Monday afternoon's game between the Northeastern women's basketball team and Canisius as the Huskies lost a 68-57 contest that saw 21 combined 3-pointers by both programs.

Freshman point guard Jess Genco led Northeastern (5-5) with 11 points, six assists, and three rebounds, ending the day as one of three Huskies with multiple 3-point makes. Fellow NU rookie Gabriella Giacone wrapped up the game two board shy of her second career double-double, but paired 10 points and eight rebounds along with a block and a steal. Giacone also led all players with five offensive boards.

Making her first start of the 2015-16 season, senior Kazzidy Stewart opened the weekday matinee by knocking down two of her first three downtown heaves, finishing with eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore Loren Lassiter equaled her career-best mark of eight rebounds and dished out two assists during a season high, 22 minutes, of action.

Claudia Ortiz paced the Huskies with eight points as NU headed into the locker room with an 37-28 deficit at hand, but was unable to add to her total following the mid-game break.

Lauren D'Hont led Canisius (7-3) with 16 points on six-of-eight shooting, while Tiahana Mills came within three assists of a double-double, finishing with 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds. D'Hont and Mills each made four 3-pointers apiece, combining for eight of the Golden Griffins' 11 makes from downtown.

Northeastern's season high, ten 3-pointers, turned out to be an understatement to Canisius' hot shooting. The Golden Griffins eclipsed the 50-percent mark by connecting on 25 of their 49 field-goal tries, while draining 47.8 percent of their 3-point attempts (11-of-23).

Although the Huskies' 16 offensive rebounds helped award them 14 more field-goal attempts than Canisius, the Golden Griffins challenged NU in the paint, denying Northeastern looks at easy scores.

After a 6-0 Canisius run to open the game forced head coach Kelly Cole into taking a timeout just 79 seconds in, the Huskies worked the perimeter, finding several great opportunities. Francesca Sally put NU on the board for the first time with a 3-pointer coming from the top of the key, while Samantha DeFreese hit a jumper from inside the foul line that cut the lead to six at 11-5.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Stewart helped Northeastern rally its way to a one-point deficit at 14-13, helping the Huskies close out the first quarter on a 13-7 run.

Two more 3-pointers by Genco and Ortiz propelled NU to its first lead at 24-23 with 7:50 to play in the half, but Canisius would go on to build a nine-point lead by halftime courtesy of four more 3-point baskets.

Without being able to attack the paint, Northeastern soon found itself relying on its outside shooting to be able to claw its way back into contention. Genco converted on all three of her field-goal attempts during the third quarter, but the Huskies could not quite slice into the Griffins' double-digit lead. NU would rally back, though, successfully trimming down a 23-point, fourth-quarter deficit to as close as 10 by game's end.

Northeastern will host Boston College next at Cabot Center on Monday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m.
