SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Although hits were plentiful for the Northeastern baseball team against Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon, runs were not as the Cardinals kept the Huskies scoreless in eight innings as they defeated NU, 6-1.

The Huskies scored just one run on nine hits and three errors in the second game of a three-game weekend series against UIW, while the Cardinals registered six runs on 12 hits and no errors.

Michael Foster came up big for Northeastern (1-1) in his 2015 season debut, going a perfect four-for-four at the plate, including one double and one triple. Foster, who was selected by the Houston Astros in last year's MLB Draft, also picked up his first stolen base of the season.

Freshman Nolan Lang held a hot bat in his hand when he was not defending the hot corner over at third, and went two-for-four, driving in the Huskies' lone run of the day on an RBI single to center. Gabe Levanti went one-for-three with a walk, while Mason Koppens also went one-for-three on the afternoon.

James Mulry walked one and allowed six hits in four innings of work, but was only credited for two earned runs. First-year pitcher John Amendola relieved Mulry at the start of the fifth inning, and surrendered three runs, only one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 2.2 innings pitched. Mike Driscoll faced one UIW batter in the seventh, and Brian Christian pitched the home half of the eighth, allowing one hit.

Incarnate Word starter Garret Cooper plagued Northeastern for seven innings on Saturday, striking out four and allowing just one earned run. Cardinals shortstop Matt Morris went three-for-four with 2 RBIs and a home run, while Bryce Shepherd legged out a triple in his lone at-bat of the day.

A one-out double by Foster in the top half of the second inning gave Northeastern its first runner in scoring position on the afternoon. Foster stole third base after designated hitter Nick Fanneron went down on stirkes, and the Huskies' second baseman scored on a base hit by Lang, putting NU in front, 1-0.

Koppens singled up the middle to start the Northeastern third inning, but Treff flied out and Koppens was caught stealing, giving the Huskies two quick outs. Levanti and Pat Madigan would notch back-to-back singles, but Burt grounded out on a fielder's choice to end the frame.

Fielding errors would prove to be costly for the Huskies defensively as UIW center fielder Mark Whitehead reached first base on a miscue by Foster, which led to a two-run home run by Morris that gave the Cardinals a 2-1 edge. The Huskies would string two hits together in the top half of the fourth, but could not quite manage to bring runs across the plate.

Back-to-back lead-off singles by Incarnate Word's Ethan McGill and Colton Besett provided the Cardinals with a pair of base-runners in the bottom of the fourth, and another RBI single by Chrisitan Divelbiss made it 3-1. UIW would add one more run in the fifth and two more runs in the seventh to take a commanding 6-1 lead as the Cardinals earned a split of the first two games of the year.

Overall, the Huskies left six runners on base, while UIW left seven. NU was limited to just two hits during its last five innings in the batter's box.

Northeastern and Incarnate Word will meet for the third and final time this series on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. (EST). The game was previously scheduled for 2 p.m., but has since been moved back to a 1 p.m. start. Dustin Hunt (0-0) will start the series finale for the Huskies, and will pitch opposite the Cardinals' Brandon Anderson (0-0).
