Press ConferenceORONO, Maine – Nolan Vesey's hat trick and a four-point night from Devin Shore led Maine (13-18-3, 8-10-2) to a 6-3 victory against the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (15-12-4, 10-8-2) on Saturday night at Alfond Arena.
Saturday's loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Huskies, which was tied for the second longest in program history and first since the 1981-82 season.
Dylan Sikura,
Mike McMurtry and
Garret Cockerill all scored for Northeastern, which was outshot 29-24 in the game and received 23 saves from
Derick Roy. Matt Morris had 21 stops for the Black Bears in his second start of the weekend.
NU was held without a power play goal, going 0-of-4 while Maine went 1-of-6 and won 29-of-56 face-offs.
Maine came out of the gates with energy in the first period, scoring early and late in the frame to take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room. The Black Bears went up 1-0 less than four minutes in when Nolan Vesey completed some tic-tac-toe passing by Maine. Dan Renouf began the play by picking the pocket of a Northeastern defender in the NU zone before dishing to Devin Shore at the left dot. Shore then spotted Vesey alone at the far post, and slid the puck across for a one-timer past Roy.
The Huskies battled back to level the score at one with 5:37 to play in the period on Sikura's fourth of the season and third of the weekend. After
John Stevens hit
Dustin Darou with a pass at the point, Darou sent a low shot through traffic that caught the pad of Morris. Sikura, however, was stationed on the doorstep to quickly collect the rebound and hammer it home.
Maine struck back just 1:12 after the Sikura tally to retake the lead on a goal from Connor Leen, who beat Roy five-hole after taking a cross-ice pass from Eric Schurhamer.
Maine continued to apply pressure during the second period, adding another two goals in the first seven minutes of the frame. The Black Bears took a 3-1 lead 3:15 into the stanza when Vesey added his second of the evening with the Huskies in the box for a too many men on the ice penalty. Steve Swavely started the paly with a pass up to Devin Shore before Shore fired a shot on goal that Roy stopped, but Vesey was there to knock home the rebound.
Northeastern came right back to make it a one-goal game once again on a goal from McMurtry just nine seconds after the Vesey marker. McMurtry, who took a pass from
Dax Lauwers, sped down the ice on an odd-man rush, and elected to snap off a shot that beat Morris shortside.
Shore brought the Black Bear lead back to two with 12:26 to play in the period when he took a feed from Jake Rutt at the blue line and blasted a shot that beat Roy over the right shoulder for Shore's 12th goal of the year.
Maine would toss another 11 shots on goal in the final period, and Vesey completed the hat trick in the first five minutes of the third, redirecting a shot from the point over the shoulder of Roy.
Cockerill brought Northeastern back within two with 5:44 to play in regulation when he roofed a shot on a wrister from the point off a faceoff win by
Dalen Hedges.
NU would pull Roy in favor of the extra skater with 2:20 left, but Shore put the game away with an empty netter with 1:32 to go.
The Huskies will be back in action on Monday night when Northeastern battles No. 3/2 Boston University in the Beanpot championship game. Puck drop at the TD Garden is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be aired live on NESN and TSN1.
