BOSTON – The Northeastern men's hockey team rallied from a 3-1 third-period deficit to force overtime, but a Matt Grzelcyk power-play goal 51 seconds into the extra frame gave No. 4 Boston University a 4-3 win in a thrilling Beanpot final on Monday before a crowd of 14,253 at TD Garden.

Sophomore John Stevens, junior Kevin Roy and junior Dustin Darou scored for the Huskies, while senior Clay Witt made 30 saves.

Grzelcyk was named the Beanpot's Most Valuable Player after scoring twice in the game, including a second-period goal that made it 3-1 Terriers.

Northeastern (15-13-4) showed heart and determination in battling back to tie as Roy and Darou turned the two-goal deficit into a 3-3 game with a pair of goals 1:35 apart in the third period.

After the Huskies were assessed a hooking penalty just nine seconds into overtime, BU (20-6-5) wasted little time in ending the game as the Terriers' captain, Grzelcyk, snapped a shot over the blocker of Witt from the top of the right circle to end Northeastern's bid for a fifth Beanpot title.

The game started with a bang as both teams scored within three minutes of the opening puck drop.

Boston University struck first just 2:19 into the contest when Mike Moran scooped up a loose puck along the right boards and skated in on a breakaway, before beating Witt with a wrist-shot inside the left post to make it 1-0 Terriers.

Off the ensuing face-off, the Huskies went to work in the BU end and knotted the scoreline 28 seconds later when John Stevens cut through the slot and unleashed a shot over the glove of Matt O'Connor (30 saves) to level the scoreline at one-apiece.

The Huskies came close to taking the lead minutes later when sophomore Mike Szmatula raced in alone on goal, but a strong back-check by BU's Brandon Hickey forced the puck off Szmatula's stick as the sophomore attempted to backhand it by O'Connor.

Witt then rose to the occasion with an unbelievable windmill glove-save at the one-minute mark, sliding across the crease to rob Evan Rodrigues after a pretty backhand feed from Jack Eichel.

The Terriers eventually did solve Witt for a second time at the 14:29 mark of the middle period. On a rush up the ice, Cason Hohmann gained the Northeastern zone with speed and snapped a shot off the right pad of Witt. The puck dribbled to the right of the cage and found the stick of Robbie Baillargeon, who ripped a quick shot over the outstretched arm of the Huskies' netminder to give BU a 2-1 advantage.

Boston University then pushed its advantage to 3-1 when Grzelcyk blasted a rocket under the crossbar from the right point with 5:42 showing on the second-period clock.

Down but not out, Northeastern mounted an improbable comeback in the third period to send the game to overtime.

Roy sparked the rally with a ridiculous individual effort in the BU zone. Skating over the blue line with speed, Roy chipped the puck up in the air to elude a check from Grzelcyk, before collecting the bouncing disc and whacking it by O'Connor from between the circles to cut the BU lead to 3-2 at the 10:42 mark.

Northeastern brought the game back to level terms just 1:35 later. Following a net-mouth scramble, Darou was able to find the loose puck in the slot and poke it through a maze of bodies to even the game at 3-3 with 9:07 left in regulation. For Darou, it was his second third-period goal of the tournament after netting the game-winner with 1:34 remaining in the semifinal win over Boston College on Feb. 3.

Despite the Huskies' best efforts, Boston University was able to earn its 30th Beanpot title when Grzelcyk fired a shot through a screen just 51 seconds into the extra frame to give the Terriers the win.

Northeastern and Boston University will square off two more times this week to close out the regular season. The home-and-home series starts Friday, Feb. 27 at Agganis Arena, before concluding the following day at Matthews Arena at 8 p.m. on NESN.
