Box Score  |  Season Stats  |  InfographicPORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Six innings was plenty of time on Sunday for the Northeastern baseball team to whip its bats around as the Huskies smoked double-digit hits for the fourth consecutive game, defeating Chicago State, 10-6, in its third game at the 2015 Snowbird Classic.
Â
First baseman
Rob Fonseca led Northeastern (3-6) by going three-for-four on the day, slugging his first home run of the season during his first at-bat of the game. Freshman
Maxwell Burt reached base safely in all four of his trips to the plate, going three-for-three with a walk, a double, and two runs scored.
Â
Outfielders
Michael Foster and
Joey Scambia bossed around the Cougars' pitching staff, combining for four hits. Like Burt, Foster reached base safely in four plate appearances, going two-for-two with a triple, two walks, two RBIs, and two runs scored. The redshirt junior from Pickering, Ontario has now registered multi-hit games in five of his eight starts so far in 2015. Scambia cashed in for 3 RBIs on a three-run home run hit to deep right field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
The Huskies' offense provided strong support for starter
James Mulry, who allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings of work. First-year pitcher
John Amendola threw for 3.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run as the freshman collected his first win of the year.
Â
Chicago State (2-8) came out firing in the first inning when center fielder Jared Patterson hit a lead-off home run to put the Cougars on the board. Two batters later, Mattingly Romanin took a pitch from Mulry over the left field wall, giving Chicago State an early 2-0 advantage.
Â
Northeastern wasted no time responding to the deficit as Fonseca smacked a three-run home run to left-center field to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead, following a pair of walks worked by
Josh Treff and Foster.
Â
Chase Matheson helped spoil Mulry's day in the top of the third when the first baseman hit an RBI-single up the middle, tying the game at 3-3. The Cougars would go on tack on two more runs later in the frame to extend their lead 5-3.
Â
Trailing by two, Dylan Sterrett walked Burt on five pitches before Foster brought him in on a triple crushed in the right-center field gap. Fonseca would tally his team-leading fourth RBI of the game during the next at-bat, driving in Foster to tie the game back up at 5-5.
Â
After Amendola put the Cougars away one-two-three in the top half of the fifth,
Keith Kelly ripped a pinch-hit infield single that began another rally for the Huskies. Burt proceeded to double down the left-field line, bringing Kelly around to third, and the redshirt-junior soon scored on a wild pitch by Jerry Silva. NU would take the lead for good on an RBI-single by Foster that put the Huskies ahead at the time, 7-5.
Â
Northeastern would give back one run in the top half of the sixth despite a double play turned by Amendola, Burt, and Fonseca, but the Huskies exploded for three-runs in the bottom of the inning when Scambia unleashed a home run to right field, his first of the season. The added insurance helpd NU secure a 10-6 victory against the Cougars.
Â
Since the first game of the day held on the same field ran late, both coaches agreed to end the game after six innings to facilitate easier post-game travel for both sides. Chicago State heads to California for a three-game series this weekend against the Pac-12 squad, while Northeastern remains in Port Charlotte, Florida, for its Snowbird Classic finale against Mount St. Mary's on Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m.
