Season StatsMERION STATION, Pa. – Despite starter
James Mulry throwing a season-best 12 strikeouts against Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon, the Northeastern baseball team had difficulty putting runners on base throughout the day as the Huskies lost a pitchers' duel to the Hawks, 2-0.
Â
Mulry, who entered the game with seven strikeouts in four starts this season, allowed four hits in 5.0 innings of work, surrendering just one run that proved to the be the eventual game-winner.
Â
Cam Hanley,
Michael Foster, and
Maxwell Burt were the only three NU players that recorded a hit during the contest. With a single coming in the top of the third inning, Hanley extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games, the longest stretch on the team this year.
Â
Foster's hit streak progressed to nine consecutive games after the redshirt-junior knocked a base-hit to right field during the top of the sixth. The center fielder also successfully stole his fifth bag of the season remaining a perfect five-for-five on the year in steal attempts.
Â
Right fielder
Pat Madigan reached base safely for the 12th straight game on Sunday, earning a walk two at-bats after Foster's single in the sixth.
Â
Isaac Lippert replaced Mulry at the start of the sixth inning and struck out two of the six batters he faced. Redshirt-sophomore
Mike Fitzgerald did not allow a hit during both the seventh and eighth innings while on the mound for the Huskies, and finished the game with three strikeouts and no walks.
Â
Saint Joseph's starter Pat Vanderslice struck out eight NU hitters and walked only one, giving up all three of Northeastern's hits. Shortstop Matt Maul went two-for-four from the plate, while second baseman Taylor Boyd hit a single and came into score during a sixth-inning rally.
Â
The Huskies' ended up winning the strikeout battle against Saint Joseph's, fanning 17 Hawks hitters while Vanderslice and Lansing Veeder combined for nine strikeouts.
Â
Northeastern (7-9) had trouble navigating Vanderslice early in the game as the Huskies did not record a hit until Hanley's single in the top of the third. Mulry struck out three batters during his first half-inning of the day, and kept Saint Joseph's (4-9) silent until the fourth inning, when Charlie Coghlin hit an RBI single that scored John Brue from second.
Â
The Huskies' best scoring chance came in the sixth after Foster singled with one out, and advanced to second shortly after
Rob Fonseca had flied out for the second out of the frame. Two NU base runners forced SJU manager Fritz Hamburg to swap Vanderslice for Jack Stover, who retried
Joey Scambia on a foul out to end the inning.
Â
After Lippert struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Boyd and Peter Sitaras belted back-to-back singles, and a third straight single by Stafford put the Hawks in front, 2-0.
Â
Northeastern fell victim to two double plays late in the game that were executed well by the SJU defense, and ended the game without collecting a hit during the final three innings of play.
Â
The Huskies' non-conference schedule will come to a close for the time being as Northeastern travels to UNCW this weekend to open CAA play against the Seahawks in Wilmington, North Carolina. Following the three-game road series, NU will return to Friedman Diamond for a six-game home stand, beginning Tuesday, March 24, at 3 p.m. against Boston College.
