BOSTON - Winners of two straight games, the Northeastern baseball team will travel to New Britain, Connecticut this weekend for three non-conference games, all at Central Connecticut State. The Huskies will sandwich two matchups against the Blue Devils on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m. and Monday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. around a 2 p.m. game against Brown on Sunday, March 8.

All-time against Central Connecticut State

Northeastern leads the all-time series against Central Connecticut State, 18-10, and has won six out of its last seven head-to-head games against the Blue Devils. The Huskies last met CCSU on March 25, 2013, when NU earned a 7-0 shutout on the road, scoring six runs during the final three innings. Then-junior Matt Cook allowed just five hits in 7.0 innings of work before then-redhisrt-freshman Michael Foster closed out CCSU, striking out two. Northeastern first met the Blue Devils for a three-game series in 1987.

All-time against Brown

The Huskies will meet the Bears for the 49th time in program history on Sunday, with NU sporting a 32-16 lead in the all-time series. Northeastern's New England rivalry with Brown is one of the oldest the Huskies have endured over the years as the two schools have been squaring off on the baseball field since 1931. From 1984 to 1999, NU defeated the Bears 14 consecutive times, scoring 10 or more runs on six different occasions. Sunday's game will be the first time Northeastern and Brown will square off against each other since NU overcame a 3-0 deficit to squeak by the Bears, 4-3, at Friedman Diamond.

Scouting the Blue Devils

Central Connecticut State has yet to take the field this year as Saturday marks the Blue Devils' 2015 season opener. CCSU finished its 2014 campaign with a 27-22 (14-10 NEC) overall record and danced into the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed before losing its second and third postseason games to No. 1 Bryant and No. 3 Sacred Heart, respectively. Dominic Severino comes back as the Blue Devils' best returning hitter from 2014 as the senior looks to better his .292 average, 49 hits, and 23 RBIs. Matt Blandino started 10 games on the mound for CCSU last year, positing a 4-4 record with a 3.09 ERA.

Scouting the Bears

Brown enters this weekend with a 0-4 overall record having been swept in a four-game series last weekend at South Alabama. Junior infielder Kevin Guthrie has opened the year hitting eight-for-16 with a .500 batting average, while teammate Will Marcal went four-for-10 last weekend with two doubles and four walks. Robert Henry leads the Bears with five RBIs, while catcher Josh Huntley and Guthrie are tied in a close second place with four.

NU splits four-game Florida trip

Northeastern bounced back from a pair of losses to Kansas (6-4) and Kentucky (5-4) on Feb. 28 by putting 10 runs up on the scoreboard twice against both Chicago State (10-6, March 1) and Mount St. Mary's (15-1, March 2) at the 2015 Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. Outfielder Michael Foster hit .538 (seven-for-13) with two triples, seven runs, and two stolen bases, while Maxwell Burt went six-for-13 (.462 avg.) and tallied four runs and two stolen bases. First baseman Rob Fonseca also collected nine RBIs in back-to-back games against Chicago State and Mount St. Mary's.

Burt wins CAA Rookie of the Week

Shortstop Maxwell Burt earned the Huskies' first weekly award from the CAA on March 3 as the freshman was named the conference's Rookie of the Week. Burt went three-for-three form the plate against Chicago State on March 2, reaching base safely in all four of his plate appearances in the six-inning game. The first-year infielder also made two key defensive plays, including a rare 9-6 double play with teammate Pat Madigan and also a 2-6-2 caught stealing play with NU catcher Josh Treff.

NU pushes Red Sox to extra innings

Redshirt-sophomore Aaron Civale struck out four Boston Red Sox players, including David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez in back-to-back at-bats, in 2.0 innings against the MLB club despite NU losing a 2-1, extra-inning decision. Civale along with Mike Fitzgerald, Mike Driscoll, Nate Borges, and Keegan Taylor combined for 10 strikeouts against the Red Sox, keeping Boston scoreless through the first four innings. Rob Fonseca belted a double off Anthony Varvaro in the fourth, and a Sox throwing error allowed Isaac Lippert to tie the game at 1-1 in the seventh. The two squads played a bonus eighth inning, with Boston walking off on a defensive miscue by the Huskies.

Ten hits and counting

The Huskies extended their double-digit hit streak to five consecutive games last weekend after dropping 10 or more hits in each of their four games at the 2015 Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. NU ripped 10 hits against both Kansas and Kentucky, but exploded for 13 against Chicago State in six innings and set a new season high of 16 in a runaway 15-1 victory against Mount St. Mary's. Northeastern is averaging 10.8 hits per game this year and has notched 10 or more hits in seven of its 10 games this season.
