InfographicNEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Two hard-fought victories against Central Connecticut State on Saturday (5-3) and Monday (5-2) surrounded a 13-6 loss to Brown on Sunday as the Northeastern baseball team finished a three-game trip to New Britain, Connecticut, with a 2-1 overall record.

On Saturday, March 7, the Huskies played their first extra-inning game of the season against the host Blue Devils, winning an 11-inning affair, 5-3, on a go-ahead 2-RBI double hit by left fielder
Joey Scambia.

NU starting pitcher
Nick Berger went toe-to-toe with CCSU hurler Matt Blandino, allowing three runs and striking out eight hitters in seven innings of work. Blandino also lasted seven innings on the mound for the Blue Devils, striking out eight Huskies.

Fresh off a four-strikeout performance against the Boston Red Sox on March 3, Northeastern pitcher
Aaron Civale shut down CCSU during the final four innings of the game, surrendering just three hits and no runs while striking out four. Civale was also credited with his first victory of the year.

Northeastern's streak of five consecutive games with double-digit hits came to an end on Saturday, but NU still managed to crank out eight hits. Third baseman
Cam Hanley went two-for-five for Northeastern (5-6), and scored on Scambia's 11th-inning double along with teammate
Rob Fonseca.
Michael Foster put the Huskies ahead, 1-0, in the top half of the third on a solo home run to left field, his lone hit of the afternoon.

Maxwell Burt notched his third straight multi-hit game with a two-for-four outing at the plate, collecting an RBI on base-hit that scored
Nolan Lang during the seventh inning.

After Berger threw back-to-back strikeouts to open the fourth inning, Ryan Costello was able to reach first base after Berger's third strike went wide of Treff. Costello made it to second base on a throwing error by Treff, and two batters later, scored before an inning-ending double play.

Two defense errors by Central Connceticut State (0-1) provided the Huskies with the luxury of grabbing extra bases. Madigan scored to put NU ahead, 2-1, when the CCSU second baseman over threw a play to first, and an RBI-single by Burt gave the Huskies a 3-1 advantage.

A single, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position for CCSU in the bottom of the eighth with one out. The Blue Devils would soon tie the game on a sacrifice fly by Connor Fitzsimons and an infield groundout to Burt.

Following a one-out single by Fonseca, Hanley belted a base-hit to left field that put two runners aboard for the Huskies. Madigan walked to load the bases, bringing up Scambia, who doubled down the right-field line to break the game open in favor of Northeastern, 5-3.

On Sunday, March 8, Northeastern (5-7) led Brown (1-4), 3-2, after four innings, but a nine-run rally by the Bears in the top of the fifth presented the Huskies with an uphill battle the rest of the way. Brown would go on to pound out 14 hits against NU as the Bears won an eight-inning game called due to darkness, 13-6.

On Monday, March 9, Northeastern (6-7) completed the sweep of Central Connecticut State (1-2), 5-2, backed by 6.2 solid innings from starting pitcher
James Mulry.
Pat Madigan finished the day going two-for-four from the plate, while Hanley netted the only extra-base hit of the game for NU, a double in the ninth inning.

Mulry struck out six batters and allowed just one run on five hits, walking just two CCSU hitters.
Mike Fitzgerald picked up his second save of the season, giving up just three hits and no runs in 2.0 innings of relief work.

As a team, Northeastern registered just six hits against the Blue Devils while committing two defensive errors. CCSU scored two runs on 11 hits with one defensive miscue.

The Huskies took the lead in the very first inning as Foster scored on an infield groundout by Hanley before Fonseca scored on an RBI single by Madigan. Burt ripped an RBI single in the top of the fifth that scored Lang from second base, giving NU a 3-0 advantage.

Central Connecticut State would cut the Huskies' lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but Northeastern would finish the game strong, bringing insurance runs across the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings. Madigan ended the day with 2 RBIs, while Foster, Hanley, and Burt each drove in one run apiece.
NU travels to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in the Big Five Baseball Bash against La Salle, Saint Joseph's, and Villanova. The Huskies will open their three-game road trip on Friday, March 13, at 3:15 p.m. against La Salle.
