InfographicSMITHFIELD, R.I. – Although left fielder
Pat Madigan improved his reached-base streak to a team-best 22 consecutive games on Wednesday, the Northeastern baseball team had difficulty matching Bryant's offense as the Huskies suffered an 18-2 loss on the road to the Bulldogs.
Â
Madigan singled to extend his streak during his first at-bat of the game and produced Northeastern's only extra-base hit on a double in the top of the sixth inning. He finished the day going two-for-four with a run scored.
Â
Freshman
Mason Koppens returned to his early-season form with a two-for-four outing at the plate and picked up his first RBI of the year on a single in the second. The NU outfielder also notched his second multi-hit game of the season and first since swinging three hits against Incarnate Word on Feb. 15.
Â
Nolan Lang drove in the Huskies' second run of the game on an RBI single in the sixth, while
Cam Hanley went one-for-four with a run scored.
Gabe Levanti went one-for-three and started his fourth game of the season behind the dish as
Josh Treff received the nod as Northeastern's designated hitter.
Â
First-year pitcher
Brian Christian threw his longest outing of the season at 4.2 innings and ended the game allowing seven runs on five hits with one strikeout and four walks.
Mike Driscoll,
Kevin Martinis, and
Keegan Taylor each made a relief appearance during the second half of the game, while traditional infielder
Mike Piscopo struck out two Bulldogs hitters in his first career bullpen outing.
Â
Northeastern (10-16, 3-3 CAA) recorded eight hits but two defensive errors allowed Bryant (6-11, 0-0 NEC) to keep runners aboard throughout most of the afternoon. The Huskies' pitching staff walked 13 batters compared to just one issued by the Bulldogs' rotation.
Â
Justin Snyder earned the victory behind a five-hit and one-earned-run outing, while outfielder Jordan Mountford doubled twice, scored four times, and drove in three more runs. Bryant first baseman Robby Rinn hit a three-run home run and like Mountford, scored four times on top of bringing home three RBIs.
Â
Following a one-two-three bottom of the first, Northeastern began to read the ball well as the Huskies registered three hits in the top of the second. Hanley and Levanti hammered back-to-back singles before Koppens put NU ahead, 1-0, on a perfectly-placed ground ball to second base.
Â
Bryant would fight back in the bottom of the third as Cole Fabio blasted an RBI triple down the right-field line to level the game at 1-1. Madigan made a difficult sliding catch in left field to retire Mountford, but the sacrifice fly worked in the Bulldogs' favor as Fabio scored from third to give Bryant a 2-1 edge.
Â
Trailing, 3-1, in the fifth, the Huskies retired Jacob Marotta and Fabio on two straight ground outs, but three walks and a base-hit ended Christian's day early as the Bulldogs orchestrated a two-out rally. Driscoll had trouble collecting the final out of the inning as Bryant scored five runs on four hits to take an 8-1 lead.
Â
Lang's RBI single to center field gave the NU bats life in the sixth inning, but the Huskies could not quite string multiple hits together for a rally. Rinn put Bryant in front, 10-2, on a two-run shot down the right-field line, and the Bulldogs extended their lead to 16-2 after a six-run seventh inning.
Â
Keith Kelly would reach base on a four-pitch walk in the top of the eighth, but Bryant's offense tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame off Piscopo, despite the infielder striking out two Bulldogs hitters.
Â
Northeastern will continue its six-game road trip with a three-game CAA road series at Elon this weekend, beginning Friday, April 3, at 6 p.m. Senior co-captain
Nick Berger (2-2, 3.53 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Huskies.
