AMHERST, Mass. – It was another strong showing for the Northeastern Huskies at the Minuteman Invitational as the men and women earned first and second overall with impressive finishes on Saturday, April 11.
Both teams competed against nine tough opponents at the meet, but final scores of 242 for the men and 147 for the women would secure the top finishes. The event was hosted by the University of Massachusetts.
The Minuteman Invite started with the 100-meter dash.
Kwame Fordwor, a sophomore in the program, shined, earning first place with a final time of 10.83 seconds. Just steps behind him was
Damani Wilson, who took home second overall after crossing the finish line in 10.86 seconds.
Donovan Henry stood in victory lane in both the 200- and 400-meter dash with final times of 21.96 and 48.20 seconds. Fordwor earned second in the 200-meters, while
Connor Quinn trailed Henry in the 400-meter dash en route to a fifth-place finish. In the 1500-meter run,
Stephen Sollowin, a captain, dominated with a final time of 3:59.18 to take home first place.
Jordan Samuels' excellent season continued in the 110-meter hurdles as the freshman from Malden, Massachusetts, cruised to a first-place finish in 14.82 seconds.
Jared Lane secured second place in the hurdles with a time of 14.84. In the 400-meter hurdles, it was time for
Anthony Pavlich to steal the show as the sophomore earned first overall with an impressive time of 55.24 seconds.
In the field events, the first-place finishes continued as
Chris Manning,
Kyle Darrow,
Robert Alder and
Connor Fugere all secured the top spot in their respective events. Manning's moment arrived in the high jump, when a mark of 1.86 meters gave the sophomore first place. Once again, Darrow dominated in the long jump. His final jump of 7.72 was the top mark by nearly a full meter.
Alder had a strong showing in the discus throw as he recorded a toss of 45.05 meters to take home first overall, while Fugere's impressive mark of 49.92 meters in the hammer throw was enough for the freshman to claim the top spot.
For the women, the success across multiple events was similar as the team earned a top-five finish 20 different times.
Jessica Dunnigan finished in fourth and third in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.50 and 25.76, respectively.
Kate Johnstone's impressive success in the 800-meter run this season continued on Saturday as the sophomore from Ascot, Australia, earned fourth overall with a time of 2:17.64.
Betsy Garnick enjoyed a solid second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a final time of 14.83 seconds.
Nicole Genard was just behind Garnick in the event, taking home sixth place after completing the hurdles in 15.36 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles,
Audrey Weyand showcased her athletic prowess with a second-place finish after posting an outstanding time of 1:06.53.
A team composed of
Camille Gooden,
Jessica Scott,
Amanda Reilly and Dunnigan earned second overall in the 4x100-meter relay with a solid time of 48.49 seconds. In the field events, Northeastern once again showcased its strength with 10 top-five finishes. Captain
Jacilyn Briggs shined in the pole vault as she took home first place with a final mark of 3.67 meters.
Jenna Serunian secured the top spot in the discus throw with a toss of 38.71 meters, while
Alexandra Rose had a strong showing in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.62 meters en route to a second-pace finish.
It was an incredibly successful weekend for the Huskies at the Minuteman Invite. Northeastern will now prepare for a mid-week showdown with Holy Cross as the team travels to Worcester, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 16.
